Does anybody think the media is out of line when reporting on student athletes?

Like how they are reporting on Jameis Winston's sexual assault case?

I mean, he's not a professional athlete. He's an amateur student athlete for a school.

Does anybody think it's in bad taste to cover stories about personal issues not directly related to the football field and turn it into a spectacle?

I think it's in horrible taste...

Unless it involves Manziel or Alabama

No it's not out of line to cover serious felony investigations. The way sexual assault cases are handled is all dicked up, though.

Millions of people will know this kid's name and a least a large percentage of them will forever view him as some kind of predator.

Only people closest to the "victim" will know her name (until she files her civil suit), and most will believe she was pure little virgin devoured by a hungry bear.

This shite gets old.

Can't have it one way...

So they should only report on when they do good things?

I see what you are saying. They talk about them like they are innocent kids but then turn them into a spectacle. In the end though, they are adults so they have to deal with it.

College sports are such big business with so much national interest there is a demand for coverage on these athletes.

The public demands these stories, so it's not the media's fault.

It is what it is. College Football is arguably the 2nd most popular sport in the country, so the interest is there for high-profile athletes, regardless of their amateur status.

Hasn't pretty much everyone at fsu figured out who the girl was?

I'm sure they have. Girls in these situations tend to be well known. That's not the same as every stranger on the street thinking you're a potential rapist--especially when the marketability of your persona is a huge part of every athlete's earning potential.

Absolutely, unless it has the potential to affect the Kid's eligibility and other aspects of his team and their season.
The JFF crap this summer was ridiculous though.

It's also one of the handful of moments in our society that all different classes, races and/or genders are blended together. It's basically the mecca for media networks and tends to have so many layers to it.

They report criminal cases by other students, who don't get the privilege of playing college football, and having their case swept under the rug by the Tallahasse PD

I guess that is where a lot of this stems from with me.

So when something like this happens with Winston, maybe this is something that should be reported on but I'm turned off by it because of previous stories.

I think more times than not, they take it too far with college athletes.

First off, guys like Jameis Winston arent student athletes. Second, I think covering a potential rape story is absolutely fair game.

How about if they don't report the rape charges, and don't televise the games, either? Problem solved, or do you just want to see the good side?
