Did Mett have insurance to protect against future earnings losses b/c of injury?

I am guessing he didn't have any insurance but was just curious. I don't know how NCAA rules work but I was thinking it would be pretty cool if LSU fans could have some type of fundraiser for him. I realize his medical bills should be covered by LSU or the NCAA but am thinking he lost several hundred thousand dollars (or more) with his ACL injury.

He already had knee problems. A million dollar insurance for a year on him would cost well over 200k.

Thats the risk of playing football, or any sport for that matter, at the college level. You could have an injury that affects your draft stock.

But with the rookie wage scale, the rookie contracts are not like they were a few years ago. #1 overall pick will get around $5mill for 4 year contract. And Mett wasnt going to be the #1 pick. Most likely 2nd rounder. And he still will get drafted. And if you make the 53 man roster, thats a minimum of $450K per year. Plus, the big contracts are the 2nd contracts now. If Mett is as good as we think he can be in the NFL, he will get a nice 2nd contract.

Point being, he wont be hurting for $$$. He will get to the league and get paid, and most of his medical bills will be paid for.

Considering the amount of money Matt Flynn and JaMarcus Russell have made without ever having to shoulder the burden, he'll be ok!

Apparently he was projected to be a mid 1st round pick.

He was projected late 1st, most likely 2nd rounder. But that was also before Mariota decided to come back and before Mett got hurt.

But if he would of been able to go to the combine, I think it would of improved his stock.

Thanks, Jamarcus.

Pretty sure those policies only cover career ending situations. It would not pay the insured if their draft stock merely fell because of an injury.

You mean 5 mill per year right? Plus around a 10-15mill signing bonus. When it's all said and done, the top 10 picks still get at least 19-35 mill.

ETA: At least 70% of it is guaranteed.

Projected mid 1st before injury, now maybe late 1st/early 2nd. Not much concern as very little difference in 1st contract money. The scouts don't have to see him in the bowl games, they are all in love with his arm. Really rare arm strength, and his mobility should be the same after recovery.

Heck no. Not with new rookie wage scale. The owners implemented this during the strike, and it was to help protect them from the future Jamarcus's, etc. These guys have to go in now and prove themselves for the first few years, and then get the big bucks the 2nd contract.

Yea $5 mill per year.

I agree its still a very very good contract haha, but thats still a lot less than what Bradford got. Bradford got 6 years for $78 mill with $50 guaranteed, along with a $17mill signing bonus. So Bradford is guaranteed $77 mill. Luck got 4 year for $22 million with all of it guaranteed, with a $14mill signing bonus. So Luck is guaranteed about $36 million. Still half of what Bradford got. And i dont think Mett was going to be a lottery pick.

And look at the difference between a top 5 pick and a late 1st round pick. Matt Elam for the Ravens contract is 4 years for $6.7mill and a $3.3mill signing bonus.

Most of those types of coverages only kick in if you experience the type of devastating injury that completely eliminates any chance of being able to play in the pros -- and the policies require at least 1 and perhaps 2 or 3 physicians' certifications attesting to that. Given that, the premiums are not that bad because the risk is relatively low.

All that being said, Mett's injury would not trigger payments undfer those coverages because he'll be good to go after surgery and rehab.

Thanks and that will be 5 cents please.

did the OP really just say that he wanted a fundraiser for Mett? Did a fire burn down his house? Did he lose all his possessions?

A fundraiser?!?!? For a guy who'll almost certainly make an NFL roster next year where the league minimum in 2014 for rookies will be $420,000.

Fundraiser? (use a Jim Mora "playoffs" speaking style when saying the word - it fits)
