Assuming Mack Brown is out at end of season, who do you think replaces him?Texas could outbid the hell outta Bama or AU dpfor a coach like Saban or Malzahn

that is not exactly the way it works. it is more complicated. sure, the big schools outbid the smaller schools but once you get in the upper ranges there are more considerations. a schools image is very important and if tejas or auburn or bama throw a number that is ridiculously high out there, there are academic consequences. to "mortgage the university" as one poster put it is not an option. matzahn is in for a huge raise and probably will get as much as tejas would offer or close to it. as far as the longhorn network goes it is a dismal failure and looks to remain that way. and if it works, it will be repeated by other schools. while tejas has a huge endowment, largely because of texas oil money, paying sports coaches insane amounts of money from this endowment is a no no (as it should be,imo). the endowment is for EDUCATION. tejas boosters, just like elsewhere are the ones ponying up. could tejas boosters really outbid bama or auburn boosters? sure, just look at the numbers of them; texas has 26 million fricking people. but they won't pay over a certain amount and bama and auburn can hang. for example, if tejas boosters go all in and offer saban 25 million per year what do you think that would do to their university's image. hell, the president should resign; make a statement. this is a fricking college! the longhorn network and their outgoing AD, Dodds, has already given them a black eye nationally and I think winning an outrageous bidding war would make them look like a desperate street whore to the academic community in the country.

There is nothing Texas would offer Saban that would make us say "We won't match that for you."

..except that Saban thinks Alabama, in general, is beneath him.

Why do people act like AU and UA are poor? Both are 100 million dollar programs.

The Texas schools get huge oil money dumped in their laps every year.

..and the amount of extremely rich Texas alums >>>> Alabama.

Malzahn would be perfect... he realizes auburn isn't a final stop job. There's no stability there for him long term, and he will never have the complete control he wants (thanks to boosters) at Auburn

Really, how many former AU HC have left AU to take a better job ?

There's no reasonable amount of cash AU or UA couldn't match.

I think you're starting to see more and more "in demand" coaches stay at their current school (although they do leverage their position to get long extensions and big raises). You can't tell me that Sharkisain (sp?) was USC's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice, and that's a program rich in history, success and a fertile talent base. Texas has a ton of money, but I think they'll have a hard time getting a BIG name like Saban, Meyer, etc. unless that big name just really wants a change of scenery (i.e. Saban in Miami) I know it's been said before, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them keep Brown one more year, and then make a run at Chip Kelly after next season

I mean if you're talking literally they absolutely could outbid Auburn or Alabama if they really wanted to. However, as you said, any reasonable number (10 mil or less) I'm sure both schools could and would match.

That is just it. TX will not break the bank on a two year HC. This time they are going for the big name and leave little doubt for success. They have to because of what is happening at A&m.

Well I can say that about every SEC school. I can name 2 coaches in recent history to do that....

Urben Meyer to Ohio St
Steve Spurrier to Redskins

.......so your point is dumb....because name the last "great" AU coach...Terry Bowden...maybe?

Briles is not leaving Baylor...at least for a Texas school. His new contract has a 20 million buyout for in-state schools, 5 million for out of state. Texas could pay it but they won't.

And there's no "assuming" Mack is out - he's out. He's been out since BYU.

Also - all the talk of "oil" money. If that's referring to the Permanent University Fund that funds both the UT and A&M systems, that money cannot be (and is not) used for athletics. If it's referring to other sources of oil funds....well that's different.

If y'all upset Baylor and possibly win the Big 12 you don't think that saves him?
