What's the best? Anyone know the advantages of one over the others?

The best answer you will most likely get is go with whichever ecosystem you are already in.

Do you have an iPhone, mac, iPad?

or

Do you have Android?

I bought the Roku 3 and I love that thing

Eta: I have an iPad but it's just for travel mostly. I have a PC and android smartphone. Roku can be had for half the price of Apple TV if you get an older version. Depends on what you want to do. Chromecast is cool, but very limited. You should get the Roku if you're thinking of Chromecast.

I was just looking into the Roku 3 actually, but how does the adding a channel work? Is it worth it to buy?

Adding a channel is easy. Roku just got the WatchESPN app, so now you just simply "add channel" and the app gets added to your channel list. Roku has like 800 channels, way way more than Apple TV.

The only couple things I can think of that Apple TV has over Roku is if you are a big Apple guy already and the Air Play/Mirroring works great. It also has a native YouTube app, but there are workarounds on the Roku. Also Roku can streamcast as well.

I was very close to getting Apple TV. But I'm not big into Apple products so Airplay and mirroring weren't going to be an advantage. Also, Apple had WatchESPN before Roku, but now that Roku has that, I am even more happy with Roku.

Everyone should own one or the other.

Agree totally. I have an Apple TV. My wife and I have iPhones iPads and MacBook pros. It was a no brainer and well worth the money. We use it almost daily. It was extremely clutch when every college baseball NCAA tournament game was on espn3

Roku is also starting to team up with cable providers like TWC. I'm assuming this means streaming live channels and OD stuff through the Roku, but I don't have cable so I haven't tried it.

I would go Roku all the way.

This is the correct answer. Both the Roku and Chromecast are pretty amazing but if you have apple products (esp iPads, macs,) the appletv makes most sense. Espn, hbo go, hulu, netflix, disney, youtbue, etc. Then anything else you can airplay from mac/iPad/iphone.

I have a couple of WD Live media streaming boxes connected to my network at the house. I like it because I have never run into a video file type it hasn't been able to play. That's important since I have a major mix and match of movie file types on my external hard drive that it is connected to.

The WD Live can run Hulu Plus. It also is supposed to be compatible with PlayOn media server which looks to offer a variety of channels.

Is there anything that the Roku would provide that I'm not already getting?

We still have cable but I'm considering cutting the cord. Our main TV viewing includes sports (mainly LSU football, baseball basketball/Saints/NFL), Disney for the daughter, movies, FX/AMC/etc. Also, the main networks are important to the wife - ABC,CBS,NBC,FOX.

Not sure if I should cut the cord or not.

I got a Chromecast because it was $35 and it's not some massive thing taking up a bunch of space. I'm real pleased that they added HBO Go to the system.

Massive? It's about the size of 3 coasters on top of each other.
