Local gun shop was running a lot of specials on Black Friday. One being a S&W M&P 15 for $599. I went to the store to pick it up and ended up leaving with a Mossberg MMR Tactical 5.56. I spent nearly an hour in the shop trying to make up my mind. I got the Mossberg for $667 out the door with 100 rounds of .223

The M&P 15 would have been about 20 bucks cheaper after taxes.

Seemed like a good deal on the gun and it felt a lot better and already has the quad rail and dust cover.

The M&P had no forward assist no dust cover but does have a cl barrel where the Mossberg doesn't.

Did I make the right decision?

Just me, but i would never get a mossberg over a Smith.

Should be fine though

I don't know a lot about AR-15's, but in general S&W > mossberg

I was not aware that they made any assault rifles.

They haven't been making them for very long. I don't know much about them though. Good luck.

Sounds like you were looking at a S&W sporter model for that price

The one with no forward assist?

If so, then you did well to go with the MMR in my opinion

Honestly, the biggest difference in the two rifles would favor the mossberg and it is the rail system. It has a better quad rail on the mossberg and it is a true free float. The S&W uses a standard m4 rail that attaches to the barrel

Free float barrel vs not

At that price point I think you narrowed it down to two can't miss budget ars. The angle of the grip on the mmr reminds me of the new bcm grips.

I could care less about a forward assist. I'm of the mindset that if it doesn't fully chamber...tap, rack, bang.

However, an ar without a dust cover doesn't make sense. Imo your asking for trouble. A dirty at is a really expensive club.

I don't doubt the opinion of the OB when assessing the quality of AR's as I've yet to jump into the AR market. Nevertheless, I'm having a hard time adjusting to the idea that spending $657 on a 22LR gets one a budget AR…… Guess I've got too much of a "cheap streak" in me.

a .223 is not a 22LR. I went back and reread the entire thread to make sure that I didn't miss something and there is no mention anywhere in the thread that says anything about a 22LR. I did look at a Mossberg 22LR ar yesterday for 237, but you won't touch a .223 for that price.

Yes, I think you did okay. If it was the regular M&P it would run around a grand and I would never pass it up for a mossberg, but for the sport, you did good.

You're entirely right. Guess I was in the midst of a brain fart or something similar. Since that's the case, just ignore my rant. Given that, the OP did ok.
