I believe that this position will determine our 2014. Assuming Ego and AJ go pro, how are we shaping up? Obviously LaCouture would be a favorite for a starting position. QT seems more like a steady backup. If MJ hasn't panned out by now then the parade is probably past. We need two studs out of Bain, Gilmore and Heron (if he moves inside). Does anyone have progress reports on how these guys have done in practice?

you need to be a realist, guess you like the way Miles coaches too. Tried of mediocre, undisciplined play. Talk to some high school coaches around the state and listen to what they have to say.

I think LaCouture grabs one of those spots. I thought he would make some plays this year, but he's just been alright. Pretty solid but nothing spectacular. Hopefully he can make the jump next year.
As far as the other spot, I think one of this last years recruits is gonna have to step up. Big time.
I really wish Ferguson would stay, I think he would help us out big time. But he might end up getting a better draft grade then Johnson.

So, coaches at a lower level of competition should have their opinions trusted more than someone that wins at a level WELL above where they are?????

Not saying these hs coaches you refer to cant be correct, just sounds suspect.

I listen to a brother of mine bitch about clm when he wakes up in the morning. He coaches football. Is he automatically right? I will tell you in this case, it is blind hate.

It's obvious that they like what they see in Lacouture with the playing time he got this year.

Me personally, I have high hopes for Bain especially. Not sure where Gilmore is. Thought he might be getting a good bit of playing time so not where some of the expectations are.

Think Herron will move inside. Competition between him and Gilmore for rotational spot?

QT may surprise us in 2014. Injuries early slowed him down this year. I think he'll be beside Lacouture if both Ego and Freak go in 2014. Prolly needs to add some pounds though.

ETA: I bet if you ask Chavis/Haley if Ego and Freak did their jobs this year, you'd get a big double thumbs up. There's a reason a good MLB like Minter gets so many tackles under Chavis. And there's a reason Ego/Freak look less than stellar with something not even close to Minter behind them.

IMO, no doubt Ego gets a better grade than Johnson. I could see Ego going late 1st and Johnson going mid 3rd.

With that said, I hope both stay. Especially Johnson. Another year and he could improve his draft status to a first round. However with the new rookie salary caps IDK if it's worth it.

Ego ain't going in no damn 1st round, lol.

I hope both guys come back, I have a want to see quality DT depth. Wouldn't surprise me if both go though.

Does anyone have inside info on how Bain, Gilmore and Heron are doing in practice?

I think the DL added to the poor LB play. Minus Welter, He just isn't a SEC LB.

word was that both were struggling with some of the finer points of development, particularly pad level. A year of development can do wonders. It's hard for a young d-lineman to do much, IMO, unless there are a couple of studs on either side.

If both AJ and Ego go, we will be ridiculously young and thin at DT next season.

Not counting any incoming freshmen, this will be our rotation:
Bain (RSFR) - no PT
LaCouture (SO) - backup/limited PT
Thomas (RSJR) - backup/limited PT
Johnson (RSJR) - almost no PT
Gilmore (RSFR) - no PT

The thought is scary.

Well hopefully LSU can land Gerald Willis and Valentine. Assuming gilmore decides to not be a complete lardass and Herron fully recovers, that would be a very young but very talented rotation of players.

Not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind seeing Anthony Johnson leave. At the very least he needs his "Freak" nickname revoked.

I've just come to terms that next season is going to be a complete overhaul for the most part. So screw it, let's throw Gilmore, Herron, Valentine, Lacouture (spelling?) and Willis into the fire and see what happens. Also, let Clifton start over Welter

Looking at next season's possible DT rotation (without Ego and AJ), not only do we need Willis and Valetine, but we need one of them to be an immediate contributor. It all starts up front. We got blown off the LOS by most good OL we faced. Unless our current guys step up big all of a sudden, I do not see any improvement on the DL next season. I am not trying to sound negative here, but I am just very concerned about this position next season. I think we will be more experienced at LB and DB, which will help to an extent.

It should be a concern next year. But with the TFR one year in the program they may be able to provide some depth. We didn't rotate at the tackle nearly as much as we have in the past.

Don't know why people are higher on Lacouture than QT. QT had flashes, didn't see shite from Lacouture outside of the big cat drill. But it's pretty frightening they'll probably be our starting DT unit next year.

Both these guys should stay REALLY! They are not ready for the NFL and I really believe with another year they would improve their draft spot tremendously! I believe thru would look like totally diff DTs with one more year! This is really key to our season next year! It's like getting toe five star recruits from JC or better. With the younger guys coming back their will be at least 2 ready to play and mayb a freshman? Like GW? Our secondary will be deep as hell with great talent and LBrs will be much improved from all the mistakes this year. If this D will work hard this off season, coupled with Jennings and BH both improving on offense, with Cam C working a whole 2 years with these guys..... Will make this Offense look much diff next year! Wow with LF in the back field, unbelievable! I think JL comes back to get his degree, he's said it many times, and our talented Frosh class. We can make a real run at it next year!
