Son is turning 13. Wants a rifle for deer. What are your thoughts on this combo in 30-06? Price, quality, scope. TIA

I would like to have some diversity in the house. I have a 243 and 7mm mag already that he has access to.

But i would love to hear any thoughts you have otherwise.

Maybe a 30-30? That was my first deer gun, but I don't know what you guys hunt on/over.

Thats not a bad deal on that 30-06 though.

The price is for nearly any caliber. I was more looking for input on the value of the purchase. The specific gun and scope.

great choice, great gun, decent scope...he can always upgrade it later if he chooses, it has the recoil pad already so if he is big enough to shoulder and handle it the recoil will be fine..I would choose the .270 but that is splitting hairs and more of a personal preference

30-06 seems a little stout for a young man just starting out...

+1 on the savage combo. I have the axis and it's a great shooting gun, way better than my weatherby.

I'd get another sibling from the .308 family if it were me.

Unless he is a big boy, 30-06 kicks like a mule. I know adult men who can't handle it

A 30-06 was my first deer rifle and I never had a problem with it. I got it for my 13th birthday. Looks like a good deal.

I shoot a .30-06 ADL

That's a great deal and fantastic caliber.

He will never feel the kick when he shoots a deer anyways

30-06 is a fine rifle going forward and he'll use it for the rest of his life.

if he has access to a .243 and 7mm, let him practice with those and use the AUGHT SIX BAH GAWD when he's comfortable.

my only concern is him developing a flinch if he isnt comfortable with the 06 early on

Remington 700adl is a great rifle. One problem is that there is no bottom metal so it have be unloaded one round at a time. No big deal, but can be aggravating. Can be upgraded to just about anything and with the 700 the sky is the limit. Trigger is much improved from earlier Remington triggers. The stock sucks. Period. Not a big deal to most guts, especially a novice and can be upgraded. Scopes a turd, but it'll do for a while. Not gonna get a great scope on a combo deal. I would be more concerned with upgrading rings and bases though. Don't be scared of the 06. I'd that's what you want to get him, get it. My nephew is 10 and a skinny shite. He's working with a 300wsm.
