Surprisingly, I agree with all of his notes.

quote:

So, you want to blame Monty? THIS is what you blame him for – Anthony Davis got 9 minutes in the first half. Nine. Yes, he had two fouls, but so what? You really think a guy who averages 3.3 a game is going to pick up another 4? You think the refs will call him on ticky tack stuff if he gets up to 4 or 5 fouls? Now, I am not using 20/20 hindsight, I tweeted in the first half that Davis would finish with just 3 or 4 fouls and the decision to be that conservative would look foolish. It was.

The Warriors scored 30 points in the paint in the first half with Davis on the bench (just 18 in the 2nd half) and the Pelicans trailed by 8 at halftime despite scoring 31 in the 2nd quarter. No way to prove how this game turns out if Monty continues to play Davis with the two fouls, but one can take an educated guess.

Agreed, he was way too conservative with AD last night

quote:

Other head scratching decision – Eight minutes for Brian Roberts in the first half and 25 minutes for Aminu compared to just 23 for Tyreke. Evans got to the basket at will, yet I looked at the box score halfway through the third quarter and he had just 11 minutes. You have a Warriors team with no inside presence and a wrecking ball of a guard in Tyreke Evans; seems like simple math. But not to Monty. He decided to play Evans less than half the game tonight.

This is sad. Aminu actually played with energy last night but 23 minutes for Reke?

quote:

At one point in this game, Jason Smith led the team with 14 FGA’s. Now that is just stupid. When I rank the guys I want getting shots, he comes in 7th, behind the Finishing Five and Morrow. I know that prevailing logic is that you take the open shot, but doesn’t it make you wonder why teams GIVE you that shot? Because it is inefficient and it prevents some of the other major weapons on your team from getting in a rhythm. As good of a shooter as Smith is for a big man, he just can’t shoot a shot every two minutes he is on the floor and expect this team to be successful long term.

I'm beyond tired of seeing Smith shoot that shot more than about 8 times a game. 14 shots for him compared to 9 for AD is ridiculous.

quote:

- David Wesley focused on one particular play at a crucial stretch of the game in which the Pelicans ran a pick and roll with Brian Roberts and Anthony Davis, got the switch that they wanted, and Roberts just dribbled the ball instead of getting it inside to AD. The play resulted in a turnover. David Wesley wanted to state his true feelings, but he bit his tongue. A wise move, seeing that he works for the team. I don’t. Brian Roberts should not get a minute for this team moving forward. Under any circumstance. Ever.

You could tell Wesley was baffled at this play. Roberts is beyond garbage and Austin should get those minutes. At least he plays hard, plays D, and makes the ball move.

I wasn't able to watch the game last night, but when I saw the box score and saw Simth had 14 shots that was a major red flag. He is a black hole on offense

If you watch that play, Roberts made the right pass he just made it late. He swung it to the corner to Morrow who then is supposed to make the entry to AD. Morrow had his foot on the sideline, though.

MM is certainly trying to assign Roberts the blame for the turnover which is unfair. How can you use that turnover as an example of how bad Roberts is playing? Don't get me wrong, he's playing bad. Bad enough that MM shouldn't have to pile on others mistakes to Roberts'.

Notes from MM over at BBS

I have never agreed with MM more in my life. Monty just does things that are borderline moronic. Who sits their star player the whole 1st half with TWO fouls!? It's not like Davis picks up dumb fouls. Most of his fouls come from playing too aggressive defensively. He uses his athleticism when rebounding instead of raw power, so you won't see him picking up loose ball fouls or charges often. So he has to reign in his defensive aggressiveness ever so slightly? Bench him! He's hardly worth sitting JSmoove if he's got 2! Further, force the refs to call those ever-important 3rd and 6th fouls on your SUPERSTAR. It is widely accepted that it's harder for star players to pick up 3, 5, and 6, and that the refs know how many fouls they have typically. Sitting Davis with 2 like a moron acknowledges you are scared of the zebras, when most coaches will DARE the zebras to call those fouls on their stars. Monty is already setting a terrible precedent.

Rivers holds himself accountable on the court, one thing Roberts quite frankly does not do. That energy and sense of accountability is contagious. The 2nd unit is just more active when he's flying around (hecticly) instead of Roberts dribbling in one spot for 8 seconds.

When I read 1 shot for Smith every 2 minutes, I had to double take. Un-freaking-believable.

Ditto for 23 minutes for Tyreke. This isn't the crap he signed up for, and this isn't the crap we wanted him signed up for as fans.

Beyond over it. Monty makes basketball un-enjoyable. It's one thing to suck. It's one thing to run crappy sets. It's another to consistently make mistakes that are common sense to even the average NBA fan. It's frustrating. How can someone that does such stupid things be a head coach of an actual NBA team?

SF is a major concern for this team, don't know if Childress should get any minutes, but Aminu just does not bring much to the table

Just found out that Smith is fined 1k per second he spends in the paint on offense.

It's really bad when Monty plays AD 33 minutes in a blowout loss (with AD finishing with 4 fouls) and 30 minutes in a very close game (with AD finishing with 4 fouls). Just idiotic.

yup. Game was lost by Davis' playing time in first half. All of our starters had a positive +/-. There is no rational justification for sitting somebody just because of foul trouble.

Foul trouble has to be managed. It was mismanaged.

There will come a night when Brian Roberts catches absolute fire and turns the tide in the Pels favor. You will see.

I agree with what he sys for the most part.

I really do not understand MW rotations it is like he comes up with them before the game and that is how he is going to play them no matter what.

I think Rivers should be in before Roberts bc Rivers is more of a play maker. Roberts can shoot but I think Rivers is becoming better.

Evans NEEDS more minutes.

JSmooth needs to get more shots...
