For myself. I'm a little chubby guy. Ringing in at about 5' 4" 170. Just recently got into hunting. I've shot my buddies 870 in 20 and 12 gauge. The recoil is no issue, but just feels weird as frick wielding the gun around. Anything with a slightly shorter barrel out there I can still successfully blast some birds with? TIA

youll adjust. get SBE2

You could get a shorter barrel. They make a 26" but I wouldn't go shorter than that for ducks myself.
If that gun feels weird, then all shotguns may feel weird to you.

Just get one with a shorter barrel

I mean absolutely no disrespect, but have you tried something with a shorter youth stock?

Try a youth model twelve, see how it fits. If ya like it get a 870.

No, I haven't. Probably the way to go.

I love my 870. Probably my favorite shotgun that I have.

They seem reliable. My paws got a Beretta pintail I wouldn't mind getting behind.

At 5'4 a youth stock would do you a whole lot of good.
Finding a youth stocked 12ga might be a bit of a problem, but im sure theres one out there

If a Remington feels bulky to you, you're probably not going to like a Beretta, they're bulkier guns.

I would get a youth model 20, throw a full choke on that thing and call it a day.

Find a Beretta 390 with a 26 inch barrel. Great guns...good shops carrying used guns will likely have some.

Every shotgun will feel like that due to your physical stature. You may try a combo of shorter barrel and shorter stock. Or, try a youth model shotgun. I also think if you did go with the standard length barrel you would get used to it with practice shooting clays. Good Luck!

I have shot lots of ducks with my 1187 I got in 87 I believe.
WARNING do not buy the Walmart version of the 1187. They have cheapened that gun so much it will hardly cycle light dove loads.
I know two people have bought them lately and they are crap. Remington should take their name off of them. The difference between those guns and mine are night and day.
Bennelis are very nice duck guns too.
One more thing I have learned over the years--buy your gun where someone can check your fit. A gun I like may not fit you properly. It is a simple process.
(One thing you can do is have a friend with you. Mount the gun on shoulder like aiming at a bird with your eyes closed and have the friend watch. Open your eyes while he looks down the barrel. Your friend is looking to see if the barrel is in front of your eyes when you open them. You will be surprised how different guns mount on your shoulder. One guy may love Brownings because he can hit with them while another curses them. Lots of times this is just a difference in fit.)

I have never actually had a gun adjusted but I have owned guns I couldn't hit with as well as the guns I have. My favorite gun is a Citori I bought years ago. I can bust dove and quail with that gun and can really tell the difference in how well I shot with. My brother hates it and claims he can't hit with it.

Im 5'9" and I shoot lights out with a youth model 1100. It pulls up really easily.
I currently shoot a A400. Solid gun and I have been dropping ducks with consistency.
The old 390 model is great also. I have one in good shop I use for dove or quail.
for a relatively cheap reliabile duck gun, the youth model 870 is solid.

Here is a link that talks specifically about 870s.

I have one I bought at K-Mart in the early eighties. It has never given me any trouble and it is my bring along gun on duck hunts in case my 1187 fails.
I ain't taking that citori in the marsh.

I'm not a tall guy either, and I shoot a Benelli SBE with a 26" barrel, ballisticly the barrel length doesn't matter as much as it used to.
Another gun that I've hunted with and shot that I liked was a Browning Maxxus, and I know there are varying opinions about those.
Not sure where your price range is, but consider those. The youth stock thing might work, but it might still be too short.
I bought a Youth Model 870 Magnum 20ga when I was 12, and it was a beast on ducks with 3" #4 lead, but it doesn't fit me as well now.

Benelli with a shorter barrel and the thin recoil pad.
If you can afford the Benelli there is no reason to look elsewhere IMO.
