There are good arguments to be made in favor of eliminating helmets all together. I think it's a pretty interesting discussion to have.

i know it's pads vs no pads, among other differences, but what is the concussion rate in rugby compared to football?

Bull Sullivan was one of the last coaches to adopt face masks. Thought it reduced the neck injuries by using the older helmets.

can you imagine how many pretty boys won't play football if they did that?

Not until baseball removes those stupid fences in the outfield.

Let's play it like the turn of the century where we just put a rope up to separate the crowd from the outfield.

I agree but ultimately we're a visual people.

We're more comfortable with brain trauma taking place slowly and out of sight over many years than we are with seeing players convulsing on the field and bleeding out of their ears.

The result I would hope for is that people learn the actual correct fundamental way to tackle without launching your head and neck at someone else's head and neck.

I think the future is something very light with a minimal light facemask... Almost like an ultra light weight bike helmet that also protects the eyes. I also think they move to pads that are slightly heavier than the pro contact equipment. You don't want guys to annihilate each other but you're still giving them armor right now.

Probably lower in rugby with minor injuries being more common in rugby.

We have some rugby guys on this board that could give a more informed answer

Isn't the reason they switched to helmets because too many people were getting hurt before?

I've always wondered why the NFL didn't recruit from world rugby leagues...these guys seem like total badasses.

Yes, and also people saying that if you learn the "safe" way to tackle someone people won't get hurt are full of it.

Tackling someone isn't safe, football is not a safe sport to play. People don't play football to be safe, we should stop trying to make an unsafe act safe

I guess there are less people getting hurt from acute head injuries now in football because of helmets...

But the helmets do not prevent problems later in life due to repeated long-term blows to the head.

Which, paradoxically, the helmet incentivizes players to use their head more when making tackles, thus contributing to brain injury.

Exactly. And these players get compensated very well to participate.

Yup. Just a fact that football hits are consistently more violent than rugby hits due to things like the LOS, offense/defense specialization, forward pass, basically everything separating football and rugby.
