This doesn't apply to Pierre. I'd be willing to guess we've extended his career by a minimum of 2 years because he's not a 25 touches/game guy. He's never injured. Didn't have any tread on the tires coming out of college. He'll play until at least 32.

And this is important.

I know everyone keeps wanting to just run PT and stop running Ingram, but it might not be a good idea to only run PT.
We don't even know if he'd be putting up the numbers he is now if we used him 25x a game.

This. 12-15 carries a game is perfect. It keeps him fresh and helps keep him from getting banged up. His best season was 2009 when he averaged 5.4 YPC and had only one game with more than 15 carries. He got hurt early in 2010 after being pounded away at Minnesota, San Francisco, and Atlanta to start the year. He's better at giving you value out of his carries, rather than being a high volume back.

that run was on 2nd and 17. Still, it was beastly.

What is the need for this sentence? It's called an average for a reason. Should we go through all the backs yardage this year and pick and choose which yards actually count?

I'd love for Ingram to get rolling. However, it frustrates me to no end to watch him come in on 3rd & short and goal line situations, when you have a RB on the team who very rarely gets stopped for negative yardage and always seems to make nothing into something.

This hasn't really happened lately, and PT has got stuffed a few times the last few weeks as well. What does this board need to keep shitting on Ingram in any thread about any RB?

I can agree with this (although I'd give him maybe 14-19 carries). My biggest issue with the use (or lack thereof sometimes) with PT is on short-yardage goaline and and 3rd and short situations. It's no secret that the Saints struggle running the football in those spots. However, it frustrates me to no end to see Ingram who, when he's not missing the hole completely, is running into the back of an O-lineman, in the game, as opposed to Thomas. As a Saints fan, how many times has PT looked to be bottled up for a loss or no gain, only to have him somehow fall forward for positive yards (even if its just 1 or 2) All the guy has ever done is produce. He's got exceptional vision and seems to always find the hole or cutback lane. #22 on the otherhand constantly misses the hole that's right in front of him.

Like LNCHBOX said, that hasn't happened much with Ingram lately, though. It did in the first few games, but I don't remember it happening more than once or twice since his return. They've been terrible in short yardage this year, but it's not just Ingram. I feel like the Saints have almost abandoned running on 3rd and short all together recently.

The point of the sentence is that the Cowboys game was an anomaly. To say he's having a good "season" is a bit misleading. He had a great game. He's not having a good season.

He's having a pretty good second half of the year. Even without the Dallas game, he's averaging 4.0 yards per carry since returning from injury. It's 6.7 if you do include that game, which I would, personally. Sure it was garbage time against a depleted defense, but he's not the only running back in the NFL that takes advantage of that.

Yes he is. He falls forward, he makes people miss, he gets first downs, he has great hands, he pass protects and picks up blitzes, he can run between the tackles, is a great draw play RB...this man was in rare form last night and I wanted the Saints to keep feeding him.

Love some PT23. He's a vital component in the success of the Payton era. That said, he could be far less effective in another system (think Meachem). He never has (even back into college) been a workhorse for carries. But he performs a role wonderfully. I do think he is the best screen pass receiver I have ever seen on any team.*

He has one more year left on his friendly 4yr $11.2mil contract. I also think he could be reupped and finish his career here.

Brees mentioned thinking about what current Saints will end up in the new Ring of Honor. I could see Brees, Colston, & PT23 all added in the same year.

*before PT23 I prolly called Tony Galbreath the greatest receiving back in Saints history. My question to oldtimers... I can't remember how much the screen pass game was a part then. Anyone remember?

It was run so poorly that I'm not sure you could call it "a part of the NFL game"

Tony G was the best till PT if memory serves. We tried often with Rue and Hilliard but it was God awful to watch.

I don't want to start another thread on this but for Ingram being a "power back" he sure does get stood up a lot. Especially yesterday. There was a few times he had a full head of steam running and just got planted on contact, It amazes me how he can't fall forward.

I thought Ingram was pretty damn good yesterday outside of 1 run. Broke a good bit of tackles
