So let's say ole lance Moore catches the ball at the 30 and can't get out of bounds so he spirals the football out of bounds at the 35 (backwards lateral pass). Does this cause stoppage in time? I would assume it stops until they can place the ball again and then that gives you time to spike it amirite?

I'm sure there is a rule against that

Huh. Never thought about that. You cant intentionally fumble the ball forwards....but backwards is fine...

Pretty sure that there's a 10 second runoff, just like a false start.

I think there is a stipulation about intentionally fumbling, but it's still a cool thought

Why? It's not a penalty

He might have to bounce pass it out of bounds which could get tricky

Oh, didn't read the backwards part. Then I don't believe the clock would stop. A player running out of bounds needs to have forward momentum for the clock to stop, so I'm sure the same is the case for fumbles/laterals.

If this was true then there should be a lot more penalties on failed backward laterals

Never knew this before. That solves that

I think this is the Todd Kristensen penalty.
