quote:

Brooks, the San Francisco 49ers linebacker, blew past New Orleans Saints right tackle Zach Strief and aligned his head behind Brees. To initiate contact, Brooks slammed his right shoulder into Brees' right shoulder, and to wrap up, he extended his right arm across Brees' chest.

Brees' upper body snapped back, including his head in a whip-like fashion. In the process, Brooks' arm slid slightly in the direction of Brees' neck.

time to move on, for sure. but that is hilarious.

applying that reverse-hyperbole to situations such as the Holocaust, 9/11, etc. in my mind. okay, not cool. time for the falcons. trap game written all over it, but i say Saints win handily.

I was coming to this thread to post something like this. Who the frick cares? I don't understand why any Saint fan would have given two craps about this controversy at all, it has zero affect on us, we won the game, who the hell cares?

I don't care anymore, full focus on getting dirty on the dirty birds.

I just found it to be the most absurdly hilarious statement of any hit ever.

I've read descriptions of parents picking up their toddlers that sounded rougher than that.

Wow! ESPN had gone full retard on this one. Poor choice to make an example out of concerning the rules. How about they use a tap on the helmet penalty for their argument.

Did Brees piss off ESPN...unbelievable they have behaved so poorly and unprofessionally, even for ESPN!

How is ESPN's description inaccurate?

And ... it's one thing to have hit the 49ers with a penalty and negate the TO. Good, because allowed Saints to win.

But ... now, Brooks has been fined roughly $16K. That ain't right. Dude did his job, nothing more.

Whats jacked up is whats constantly preached is you cant make contact (hit) a QB above the shoulder pads. plain and simple. Its a foul every time. You hear it and see it every game.

ESPN conveniently forgot that.

Clearly from last nights game, it's not though. NFL is 'tarded

It was a foul last night as well. Refs miss calls though.

Eh, conveniently not when your last name is Manning, Brady, Brees or Rodgers though. Not the Saints fault, obviously, just feel as if there's no consistency in the calls and sometimes after the first 8 games, the remaining games start to feel pre-determined.

The Saints were called for roughing in the game.

I've seen teams not flagged when they hit Brees in the facemask.

It happens. Usually they get it. Sometimes they don't.

Refs are human.

Name had nothing to do with last night. The crew yesterday missed a bunch of calls on both sides, they were bad.

I know for sure that they missed the call last night. I'll have to watch the replay to see where there ref was and where he was looking.

I made a post in an earlier thread that quoted the NFL rules to illustrate that one of two penalties could have been called on the Brees hit.

Illegal contact or roughing.

I'll look it up again.

P.S. that was a penalty against Ryan that was missed.

Here are the NFL rules......

Article 8 There shall be no unnecessary roughness. This shall include, but will not be limited to:

(h) any player who grabs a helmet opening of an opponent and forcibly twists, turns, or pulls his head. _________________________________________

ROUGHING THE PASSER
Article 13 Because the act of passing often puts the quarterback (or any other player attempting a pass) in a position where he is particularly vulnerable to injury, special rules against roughing the passer apply. The Referee has principal responsibility for enforcing these rules. Any physical acts against passers during or just after a pass which, in the Referee’s judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls. The Referee will be guided by the following principles:

HITS TO PASSER’S HEAD AND USE OF HELMET AND FACEMASK
(3)?? In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary-roughness rules covering these subjects).

ETA: Stop arguing with morons. Someone email the rules to ESPN.
