I just got a damn nice Schecter C-4 Diamond Series with a coffin case for $180.00 off CL.
I am 48, (I know, old fart)the only thing I know how to play is the skin flute. I think I have a pretty good ear for music. So what is going to be the easiest way to learn?
Any suggestions on a practice amp, strings, play with or without a pick, etc...?
Any help would be appreciated guys.

Ultimateguitar.com and YouTube.
Lose the pick for the most part but you're going to want to know how to do both

Thanks man.
Any thoughts on the bass? Was it a decent buy at $180. The only marks on it is a little bit of buckle rash on the back that I believe can be polished out.

One of the best teachers I've found:
Scott Devine

Or you could just ask heady, he knows everything.

And learn your scales if you ever intend to play with anyone else.

Just play along to your favorite songs. Try to figure out the notes and lines by ear. If you get ambitious, you might try a few scales. Blues is really easy to play by ear to.
Bass is so easy compared to other band instruments (:nb4Doc:). Unfortunately, it's also the least fun to play alone.

I guess if you only play root notes it is.

Youtube has made it so easy to learn how to play an instrument. Wish youtube was around when I learned how to play guitar almost 20 years ago.

Thanks guys, I really want to learn and maybe even get to where I can play along with some friends. I love music and just want to have a little fun.
I have got to get an amp, I think I want a small combo unit that I can play a CD through also.

How big of an amp?
I'd suggest going with Ampeg for a combo amp if you go that route.

I've gotten the itch to buy a new bass recently. Been watching Guitar Center for deals. I'll probably get something cheap to start out, and if I keep up playing again, I'll go in for something more expensive.

First learn all the notes on the fretboard. It all makes sense once you get that dkwn. Then watch YouTube videos of basic fingerings techniques . Do not start playing with a pic. Practice a lot

studybass website is a magnificent tool for beginners and intermediate musicians. There are lessons (written in words) then examples of what to play that fits that lesson (alonng with samples of it being played) and then songs that bass line/rhythm/method can be applied to.

Check out the Orange Crush line. Great sound and features for the price. Specifically you should look at the 50w model. You can find them in the 200-250 range. Line out (PA), speaker out (cab), line in (CD player) and some pretty decent controls.

I think this is what I am going to do with the amp, I have found an Acoustic B20 on CL and it looks like they get excellent reviews.

This sounds pretty good, will look into it, the link is blocked at work.
