Eagles – Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) This is the second-best selling album in music history, behind Thriller.

Eagles – Hotel California
Boston – Boston
Bob Seger – Night Moves
Peter Frampton – Frampton Comes Alive
Ramones – Ramones
Steve Miller Band – Fly Like An Eagle
KISS – Destroyer
Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak
ELO – A New World Record
Stevie Wonder – Songs In the Key of Life
Boz Skaggs – Silk Degrees

And on the country scene: Wanted! The Outlaws - Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter, Willie Nelson & Tompall Glaser

LSU's Power Dorm (by the Lab School). Stereo speakers 3' tall. Vinyl on the turntable.

Those albums blasted loudly and melodically down the halls and into the street. All day and all night.

I'm really digging these "Best albums of 197X" threads; they really take me back.

Somewhat miffed, though, at the lack of mention of anything by Chicago. They released an album every single year of that decade & each one has a few classics at least.

For instance, here's a 1977 performance of "If You Leave Me Now"; song was released in 1976.

The Funky Kings had their one and only album in 1976, which contained Jack Tempchin's version of Slow Dancing:

quote:

Although Davis had high hopes that the Kings would become the next Eagles, they received little notice, and, when Arista passed on releasing a second record, disbanded after one album. The first single from the record, Tempchin's "Slow Dancing," did receive minor airplay at the time of its release, but failed to make any waves until being covered by Johnny Rivers in 1977, when it peaked at number ten.

Tempchin's version is far and away much better than the Johnny Rivers one, too, IMO, but the only online version I can find is one of him singing it in 2010 and it isn't very good.

Indeed! That 70's sound of theirs with the wall of horns & non-linear song structure was the best part of their career. All the 80's stuff was only good for dimly-lit gyms where awkward teenagers "slow danced".

Wasn't as big of a fan of the Doobies with Michael McDonald. He's a great singer and all, but their music changed when after Tom Johnson left the group, and it was a tough transition for me.

Yeah, Chicago could've been mentioned on almost every decade of the later 70's.

+1

I respect Michael McDonald but he does not belong in the Doobie Brothers

<------- This guy appreciates the Chicago mention. Even though I have liked something on every Chicago album, I think their last 'rock' album was VIII in '75.

That list is pretty weak- 'arena rock' had started, and real rock music was back underground again.
