Our whole OL is playing better, except Brown (PFF Thread)

The interior of the line seems to have gotten better every game.
If you were to look at each players' PFF ratings on a graph, they'd all either be going up or staying steady.
And I think there's a pretty specific reason why: Evans has been getting healthier.

As you can see, he's performed much better as of late.
And with him, the whole interior has performed better.

BUT

It's time we start looking at Charles Brown's numbers.

His run blocking has been pretty decent.
However, Brown's a LT and his pass blocking is bad; and it seems to only be getting worse.
PFF notes that "For the season, Brown is the lone member of the Saints offensive line grading in the red and his -12.7 pass blocking grade ranks 70th out of the top 75 qualifiers at the position."

This development makes me concerned.
At some point, Armstead has to be considered a second option.
After all, Armstead sort of impressed me in the preseason.

It'd be great if they felt confident enough in Armstead for him to take over next year.

correlates with the team we play for the most part. team has a good defense, he has a bad grade. shitty defense, he has a good grade

Wouldn't you expect that trend to exist for the whole OL?

Or at least for both tackles?

maybe so but he also might just be an average lineman. he might not have any room for improvement.

just trying to make sense of his shittiness

I know.

What concerns me more is that opposite defenses are beginning to realize he's the weak link (even when compared to DLP).
I realize Brees has great awareness of rushers coming from the outside, but we certainly don't need a LT getting beat all the time.

I certainly remember cursing Brown's name a few times against San Fran on Sunday. I really hope Armstead can come in and be a nice starter. He looks promising for a young guy.

Yeah.

Bushrod's overall score this season is +3.1.
But his pass block is -3.9, which puts him at 62nd of 76 tackles (Brown is 71st, but his pass block score is way worse).

It looks like we made the right decision not to pay the large salary to Bushrod.
Thats a very nice trend to see in Evans. And I'm sure the happiest person around is DLP

I never saw anything in camp or pre season that screamed Armstead was the next great thing or not. Its all how has a progressed in practice week in and week out. He could be pushing right now for a start or the coaches are hoping for a leap over the off season in his skills. Only the line coaches know.

Did you see Strief get blown by like he was a fire plug on the play Brees got hit? Zach was saved by the refs on that one.

I think Evans getting healthy has a lot to do with that. You're seeing the effect Evans has on the interior of the line.

Was Evans hurt in the last game?

I remember hearing that.

Nothing we didn't already know about Bushrod. Overrated player who was made to look a lot better by his surrounding talent. Thank God they didn't shell out big time left tackle money to keep him.

I hope we take at least two OL in the draft. Hell I wouldn't be opposed to 3.

I'd really like to put Brown back at RT and Armstead at LT if he's ready. Put Strief back in that Tackle Eligible role he was so good at.

Strief has been really good this year. I really hope we can re-sign him on the cheap.

I would love it if we activated Armstead against the Falcons in case we blow them out. Would like to see him get some regular season playing time.

This issue will be addressed in next year's draft...

Yeah, it's kind of strange.
Strief (RT) has been stellar at pass blocking and decent at run blocking.
Brown (LT) has been decent at run blocking but shitty at pass blocking.

I almost want to see what happens if we switched them.
But I imagine Strief would not be able to move around enough.

I was thinking about this, too.
I mean, it's not like Falcons can generate a pass rush worth a damn.

Why not try him out?
This is probably the last game we can do so.

I know...it's strange because he gets good grades...but idk. Seems like almost has that just one terrible play a game where he gets Brees killed.

Yeah, Agreed.
And PFF noticed, as well.

Although keep in mind that their ratings are imperfect, especially in the preseason.
