Yesterday, Payton used the pistol formation more than in any other game so far this season. Many of the offense's successful runs came out of the pistol.

Hopefully we see more of this formation moving forward because it allows the offense to run I formation runs in spread sets against nickel & dime defenses. It also doesn't allow teams to key on the run because of the 3-4 receivers & it allows for power runs against "smaller" defenders.

It may look similar at first glance, but it isn't "I". No fullback, so you lose that lead block.

It works for us because of the defense being aligned in the nickel, yeah. I think some of the benefit is that Brees is halfway to being in the shotgun, so it's almost like the actual formation is a play-action in reverse, or a draw scheme-wise vs the defense; forces the D to play the pass first.

Yes, I like it too. Even with no fullback, the HB can still run those downhill runs that he would out of an under-center single back formation. Can't do that out of the gun.

That's true but what I meant & should have made clear is that the formation still allows an offense to pull lineman & trap just as they do in I formation or pro set. It's just minus the fullback but you seem to understand what I was getting at.

I think you're going to see some wrinkles by Payton out of this formation.

Jet Sweeps, play action to the RB, play action to a WR...
