I need a little help here.
Last year, I got my first shotgun. An Browning 16 gauge passed down from my grandfather. Fell in love with the gun and hunting.

My step-father for my birthday this past weekend bought me a rifle too so I could stop borrowing his and friends.
It is a used Marlin XL7 30-06. There is no rail on the gun to attach the scope, but the scope he gave me already has rings attached to it.

Also, the barrel already has the holes to place the rail on I think?
I can provide pictures later in the day. But how hard is it to attach the rail to the gun? Or should I just let a professional do the work? Also, what exactly do I need to buy?

Thank you for all the help in advance! This is my first rifle and just trying to get it up and ready for when the semester is over and I can go back home to start hunting.

You may have to find rings with a specific base to fit the mount you will be using.

Give Marlin a call and see if they make scope mounts specific to that model of rifle. I would imagine they probably have the exact setup you're looking for.

Very rarely do you have to actually drill and tap holes to add an optic to a hunting rifle. They are usually set up to accept a scope when using the right equipment.

Maybe someone here will have a rifle just like you and can give some advice. But if not, give Marlin a shout.

Hope this was helpful. You'll find a lot of knowledgeable people on here to help you out of one person does not have the perfect answer.

Thanks for the advice.

For some reason I never even though about calling Marlin.
Say I do find the right fit that I need, will it fit right into the holes and stay in place or is there a special type of glue or adhesive I will need to use?

ETA: sorry if none of my post makes sense, still learning here.

Bapple already answered - you'll want a scope base for the rings that are on the scope. If not, you can start over with a set of Leupold scope rings and a base.

About to look at the link.
Have to pretend to be typing in class since I sit on the 2nd row.

Also, does anyone have any opinions the XL7? From the reviews I have seen, it looks like a decent gun for the price.

For the amount of recoil a 30-06 puts out, no way an adhesive will be able to keep your mount stable.

I imagine they sell a rail or scope mount of sorts that screws directly into the receiver. Like I said, a call to the manufacturer will probably avoid a lot of confusion.
