not sure if anyone on here is into this comic, but this could be interesting. Not sure how it will translate to AMC but I guess something along the lines of what walking dead did to that comic. Hope it's not a disappointment

Preacher is one of the best stories I have ever read, and that includes all comics/book I have read.
It is excellent and I trust AMC to do it justice.

AMC does great work, but anything other than HBO/Showtime will totally dilute the concept. One of the best comics ever though, wish AMC would have picked up Hellblazer or Sandman instead.

that's what I'm thinking
basic synopsis, a preacher with an interesting personal history has a hybrid angel/demon inhabit him, and then goes on a quest to confront god. There are some great characters in this story and some crazy shite goes down, don't really know what to compare it to.

Yeah, agreed on all counts. Not seeing how this can be done on regular cable and have it come out decently.

Basic synopsis of comic book?
quote:
Written by Garth Ennis and illustrated principally by Steve Dillon, Preacher concerned a beaten-down Texas pastor named Jesse Custer – a man whose priest’s garb hides a violent, lawless past. When Custer bonds with a cosmic entity known as Genesis (killing his entire congregation in the process), he decides to use his newfound powers to track down a God who has apparently abandoned His Creation. With his gun-for-hire girlfriend and a drunken Irish vampire in tow, Custer embarks on a journey that brings him face-to-face with sexual deviants, killer hillbillies, a powerful secret society, and a gunslinging divine enforcer known only as the Saint of Killers.
And when they were looking at doing a full length Preacher film, here is a concept for Arseface they came up with

HBO passed on doing Preacher a few years ago.

Oh man, if they do this right this will be my favorite show instantly. What a great comic to adapt. Holy shite I'm pumped over this.

Oh please let this happen. HBO pussed out.

Hellblazer would carry over better. As much as I love Sandman I think it would be too cerebral for most people and fail. I can see it on HBO, but not AMC.

I think Keanu Reeves has ruined any future Hellblazer projects.

As a longtime fan of the Preacher series, I am ridiculously thrilled that an adaptation is seemingly finally happening. A TV one specifically, as I never thought a film version would be successful due to 1) the subject matter could possibly be too controversial for any movie beyond film number one, 2) the film would either be a too long version of the first storyline (of which the first collected volume of the series includes both story one and two) or would include stories one and two, and storyline two - for those familiar is the one with the character Sy - is probably the weakest storyline in the entire series, and 3) if only one film came to pass, we would never see the BEST Preacher storyline - the "Until the End of the World" story.
As to how it would translate to TV, especially a basic cable channel like AMC as opposed to HBO? I think looking to both the Walking Dead and Breaking Bad can give a good idea. The violence level present in Walking Dead comes pretty close to that in Preacher, both in the type of violence and in the sheer human numbers catching the violence. An added bonus might be that Preacher wouldn't need to dress up characters getting shot/etc in zombie makeup beforehand. In regards to how the language/sexuality would be handled? In terms of sexuality, as enticing as it may be, if we lose seeing the nudity from the comics I don't think we lose anything of the actual story. In terms of language? Yes, we would have to sacrifice the sheer degree of bad language, but Breaking Bad was allowed a certain number of "F-words" per season. Yes, these were more reserved for DVD/Netflix viewers and were bleeped (well, more like silenced) in the original AMC airing, but again, the lack of some of the swearing for a TV adaptation I think is acceptable since we don't lose the awesome story just because we lose a number of "fricks."
My only concern would be some degree of budget. Unlike Walking Dead and Breaking Bad (which are set and filmed in Atlanta and Albuquerque), Preacher is very much a road story, taking place in a multitude of settings. But this is a problem that creative uses of studio space/sets and some location shooting may be able to solve.

the "Until the End of the World" story.
The absolute best story arch in the series. The cover art for the graphic novel still gives me chills.
The arch introduces us to the John Wayne pseudo guardian angle (even though he appears earlier in the comic, this gives us his appearance in Jesse's life), Grandma, Jody and TC. It really fleshes out the character of the Preacher. The night Jesse speands telling Tulip about his childhood is some of the best writing in comic history. I wonder if the tv series will include the one-shot comics; Whiskey and Blood, One Man's War, The Story of You Know Who, and Good Ole Boys?
I agree that a movie format would not suit the story well. AMC may well be able to pull this off. I have to say with Rogen and the fat guy from Super Bad involved, I'm worried that there will too much campiness to take the show seriously. But I may be wrong.
There are two projects that I have always wanted to see made into movies/tv series; Preacher and A Confederacy of Dunces. But I've always been worried that if these weren't handled correctly, it'll lessen the impact of the original subject matter.
ETA: The theme song for the show has to be Time of the Preacher as sung by Willie Nelson. Has to be.

Sounds sort of similar to Supernatural

Yeah, I was just throwing out a vertigo title that might fit that cable format of AMC better than Preacher. Hell, even Y the Last Man and Fables would be a better fit than Preacher. Though Y would undoubtly have TWD comparison and likewise Fables would have to endure OUAT comparisons.

I could live with toned down language, even though it might completely neuter a character like Cassidy. But a made-for-cable Herr Starr, redneck family, and say the "War in the Sun" arc would suck the heart-and-soul out of Preacher for me. IMO, what makes Preacher work so well is just how ridiculous everything is, but that being said, I will definitely tune in and hope for the best.

I can't imagine AMC being able to do Preacher justice with the limitations they have but I'll give it a shot of it does happen.
