Going deer hunting for the first time this winter and wanted a budget gun to start out.

Ruger American .270 with a Leupold VX1.

Saved some money buying it in navy digital camo and put it towards the optic. In the gun for a little over $500.

How did I do?

Not to bad. Nice scope for sure. In all likely hood you'll be able to everything you need to do with it for years to come.

Unless your hunting Cape buffalo at close range or sheep at 600 yards you won't need another one.

Smart choices. Some here will slam you for spending less than $600 on a scope. Ignore them.

I think you made a really good purchase. All I use is a Savage Axis .308. It gets the job done.

270 is an awesome round. Unless you kill most of your deer at dawn and dusk, scope will be fine. Digital camo looks bada$$!

Bought the rifle online at Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore for $299 with free shipping. Bought the glass at Cabelas with a $20 off coupon for $209.

Yep. You don't need expensive glass to hunt unless you're a sniper. I'll never understand the pissing contests over optics.

It's not really about the accuracy do much as the light gathering and clarity. Good optics has been the only reason for some of my kills because I. Couldn't see the target without it. I
