San Juan, Puerto Rico advice

Wife and I are going on a little trip there in March.
We are looking at renting a condo.
We are looking in either Old San Juan or near/on the beach in Condado. (I prefer OSJ while the wife would probably prefer the beach). We are going to rent a car and all of that to go see rainforests, and we will be doing OSJ and the beach no matter what. Its just a matter of where to stay.
So, those with knowledge: Where would you stay?

Hilton condado is really nice and right on the beach. Great running view and location. I imagine you can get it fairly cheap but it probably won't have the full amenities that a condo might have with a kitchen and whatnot.
ETA: Crap it's been a year or so. I think it was Hilton Caribe. Let me go check.

I have stayed in condado 3 different weeks for work. I prefer condado

200 hundo a night. Can get a very nice condo in the same area for 110-ish a night.
The wife is all about renting condos for some reason. Personally, I like hotels but she's plans all of this stuff. She's just giving me some input into location.

Yeah I'd prefer other places over San Juan. Maybe he can get in some baseball scouting done while he's down there and adopt a future prodigy.

Costa Rica would be awesome but:
I would have to take more time off of work than I am willing to do. I get backed up when I take a day off. A week? FML.
and
We just spent 20k on a Caribbean Wedding/Honeymoon 9 months ago. I'd rather keep the costs down.

Have you been to AZ and done the Grand Canyon?
Lots of great places to stay, eat, and things to do around Scottsdale/Tempe/Phoenix.
