Best pre-1970 war movie

I just finished watching Battle of the Bulge a little while ago and it got me to thinking about it. The whole movie just seemed so cheesy, with the technology and the lack of historical accuracy.
Can war movies from pre-1970 really stand up to anything done with better technology or plots involving Vietnam? It's hard to say.
It just seems like all of the really quality war movies were really made after 1970.
Anyway, my top pre-1970 war movie list:
1. Patton (released in 1970, but it counts for pre-70s)
2. Lawrence of Arabia
3. Bridge on the River Kwai
4. The Dirty Dozen
5. The Great Escape
I really can't think of any other movies beyond those five, expect maybe Dr. Strangelove, which I don't think really counts.
What say you M/TV board?
edit: I just remembered The Great Escape. So that makes five.

This thread was just done a few days ago.
Twelve O'Clock High
Stalag 17
Best Years Of Our Lives
Mister Roberts
Beat any war movie done after them. All done with minimal to no special effects. And actually don't have much violence in them at all, except for Twelve O'Clock High, which uses about two minutes of real air combat footage.
Explosions aren't what make great war movies. It's the story.
Here is Twelve O'Clock High. Watch it LINK
ETA: Here is Stalag 17. Watch it, too LINK

Paths of Glory (1957) is one of the best movies ever. Not even just war movies. Movies in general.

So is this like saying Playstation 4 games will always be better than SNES games because the graphics are better?

If you liked Battleground. You really need to see A Walk in the Sun.

Where Eagles Dare. It's not historical, but it's a good ww2/spy film. I bought it on DVD. I'm going to watch it again when it gets colder. A good cold weather movie, IMO.

Von Ryan's Express. It and The Great Escape. Not true war movies in the Saving Private Ryan mode, but they hold up.
