I ran Venice-to-Pilottown-to-SWP and MRGO-to-Hopedale for years and I can't remember once when the USCG actually shut the river down for fog.

That is correct. If he does decide to operate he will do so without a pilot.

So a pilot baller is like a platinum-level OT Baller is what you're saying.

I watch one of these pilots jump on the cruise ship we were on in the middile of the night when we entered the mouth of the Miss river.

Ohh lord I could tell some stories about these jackasses getting on and off those ships running up from pilot town. The Branch pilots weren't too bad. The Crescent Pilots were not so good. Some of them were way over-nourished. Damm near falling off the rickety arse ladders.

yea i don't know of it closing often. I have stayed at pilot town a few times and it is crazy foggy like literally everyday. just a common work hazard.

I didn't say they don't operate in the fog they just don't operate when there is less than a certain amount of visibility, I have forgotten now. The river closes when visibility reaches a certain point.

Outside of the river (particularly in the SWP anchorage), that's on the master of the vessel. Inside the river, that ship's not moving without a pilot.

And it's the pilot associations that make the call as far a ship traffic movement in the river during foggy conditions. Trust me, I've sat in on phone calls/radio calls where two associations discussed this & tried to come up with a plan.

I was referring to the capt of the smaller vessels not the ships. The ships will steam through the fog unless the pilot doesn't feel comfortable then pull back. It's up to the capt or the pilot's discretion on whether or not they want to keep pushing.

Probably biased because I worked for 'em for over a decade, but they're the best on the river in Louisiana.
