Mizado Cocina review dinner (and now two Brunches)

I liked the food overall. I will say that it is an interesting menu.
I like the choices of salsa and the guac, we also foolishly got a queso. It was a lot of dip, so we just got four tacos to share.
I really liked the creamed avocado and pepper salsa. Would be a perfect burger condiment instead of mayo.
The guac was good, the queso was good and had a lot of kick when you add the sauce they give you with it.
I do like kick, but the Pork Belly tacos were way too spicy. After I ate mine, I couldn't enjoy anything else. I ate it after my peking duck taco, which was excellent. We want to go back soon to try some of the other tacos and main courses. The tacos are around $5 each (sell 2 for 10).
I had a house pomegranate margarita, and I liked it a lot. They do a salt foam on top. I've had that at Oyamel, but no where else.
After the ultra spicy taco we had to get a dessert so we split a Tres Leches bread pudding. It had a great flavor and the marshmallow meringue on top definitely helped to absorb that heat.
The prices were good. I am not sold on the loud music. It's like what you would hear on B97 minus the rap. They played "Sail", "Royals" , "wrecking ball", "radioactive" current pop music, but it was loud, not in the background, you talked over it.
The servers all carry a POS system in their hands (like an ipad) and it gets the orders in quick. We didn't wait long at all for drinks or food. Though the waitress had two people backing her, in fact she only cleared dishes and took orders, a runner would come bring drinks or food. So the serving concept seems solid.
Another quirk. The check in system. They ask for your cell phone number and text you when your table is ready. Which is cool, but then they don't call out the reservations at all. The lady was right next to me, texting me. In fact everyone waiting was texted, there was no vocal name calling.
I got a few pictures to upload, but all in all I liked it.
I saw that the tamales looked really good, and they had some kind of lobster lettuce wraps that I saw at a few tables.
The decor inside is ultra-modern, with all scandinavian style furniture.

Thanks for the review. We had a thread going around here leading up to the opening, so I was wondering when we would get the first post about it. It just opened last Thursday.
I was supposed to go last Friday but ran out of time. Can't wait to get there soon and try this out. Even the drink menu looked interesting.

Saw this place mentioned in a different thread earlier today and it was the first I had heard of it. Sounds like something I would really enjoy...the food anyway. Not so sure about the whole texting for a seat thing. I'm all about texting in general but I'm just not sure if this is a good way to seat people.

Even without your Oyamel comment, your review made me think of that spot. If they can pull it off, will be a fantastic addition.

yeah if you have been to Oyamel, it will remind you of it. I did a review of Oyamel a few years back.
I really like the concept and they do some deconstructed items, not to the extent of Jose Andres, but a nod in that direction.
Except no grasshopper tacos.

Love Oyamel. Those grasshopper tacos have a good flavor but it is like chewing on straw.
Andres can pull off Oyamel (and Jaleo, etc...) Because he has armies of highly skilled cooks. Ask any restaurant owner in New Orleans, there is a very small amount of talented cooks. Same for servers. To go off on a tangent, New Orleans has too many restaurants and not enough cooks and front of house staff.

They did a nice job with the building and interior, but I didn't get any pics of that.
I started off with a house margarita with Pomegranate.
then we got the salsa sampler
Left- BORRACHA
Ancho, serrano, mezcal, Steen’s, orange.
Middle-AGUACATE Y SERRANO CREMA
Tomatillo, avocado, lime, Salvadoran crema.
Right- TOMATILLO
Roasted onion, garlic, serrano, cilantro.
The middle had a great flavor and would make a great condiment, the right was a standard spicy tomatillo, the left was okay, but made a better sauce for meat than a chip salsa.
We also had the tableside guac and the Chorizo Fundido.
CHORIZO FUNDIDO$8
Housemade chorizo, queso blanco, Cotija, Mozzarella and Manchego cheese. Crisp tortilla strips.
(not pictured the excellent and very fresh tableside guacamole. It's $8 but worth it. I really enjoyed it.
It was very good. A little hot when you add the sauce that comes with it. I like the chips it comes with, but we ran out of chips way before the dip.
We each got a order of Chef's tacos, and then swapped one each.
On the left we have the Pork Belly but man that habenero sauce is 4 alarm hot.
PUERCO
Smoked pork belly slow cooked 48 hours. Ponzu apples, pickled vegetables, salsa de habanero.
On the right the peking duck taco, this was excellent. Perfectly cooked and a interesting choice of topping, being mostly pineapple.
I did really like the actual pork belly, just the topping was too hot to enjoy.
PATO
Peking duck confit, caramelized sweet onion, fresh pineapple melon salsa.
for dessert we split a Tres Leches bread pudding.
Very good with a marshmallow meringue topping very good twist on the bread pudding theme and it's baked with pineapple instead of raisins then soaked in a tres leches sauce.
I liked the layout and the food. I expect them to develop it like Zea and move into neighborhoods. I think Zea's is one of the better "chains" and I would support a Mizado, the menu is interesting enough to make you want to try the majority of it.

Is this a place that I can bring my young kids pretty easily? Or better suited without? Some places are easy with kids, what was your impression on that subject with this place?

I can't see the pics yet, I'll have to wait until after work to see them.
I don't know why but I have limited expectations for this place. The idea is great and the menu appears daring, but I just don't see the guys from Zea's pulling off first rate Mexican/Latin.
I'd be thrilled to be wrong, but the ambiance appears to attract younger diners that are easy to fool. Not F&D boarders with more refined tastes!
I look forward to trying them out once the rush dies down.

Actually, the cuisine, as described, is something I can go for. I don't think Zea's is bad for what it aspires to be (I know, I know), and I'll give this place a try. Access is a little awkward, from where I live.
I stopped by for a drink and an app this week.
The decor is definitely modern and it is a pretty small dining room. Not a place for kids or big groups. I didn't really care for the vibe. However, the bar and patio were really nice. I could see myself having many drinks on the patio when the weather is good.
We had the shrimp ceviche and it was excellent. Also had the salsa - chile de arbol. The flavor was great, but it was VERY spicy. A little more than I expected.
The drinks were awesome. We had a cucumber margarita and the private barrel margarita. It was made with a special barrel of Harradura made for the restaurant. My new favorite margarita in the city. All of the food we saw passing by looked really good as well.

Went with my wife last week and very much liked this place. Don't have time for a full review, but def. loved cucumber/jalepeno margarita and queso.
Tacos and banana indian gauc was pretty damn good too.
They are def. going for a hip and young crowd vibe, but not in an over the top obnoxious way.

Had tried the brunch a couple of months back before seeing "War Horse at the Saenger, and then again today.
I find their brunch pretty good if you are looking for something different.

Crisp corn chips salsa roja, slow roasted, hormone free chicken, chorizo black beans, cilantro, cotija cheese, poached eggs.
It was a really good dish, like a breakfast enchilada bowl.
When we went back for brunch today we got just the one salsa we like so much
AGUACATE Y SERRANO CREMA

Masa cake, housemade Duroc chorizo black beans, mozzarella, salsa roja, fried eggs, cilantro, crispy corn tortilla strips.

Crispy hormone free chicken, citrus and rum marinated, aji Amarillo, white soy. Criolla Fresca.
They were fried good, but we didn't love the acidic sauce. The sauce works for cevich but not fried chicken.
she got the Pork Belly potatoes as a side. I love these. they are so good. But it's obvious whenever you cook something with bacon fat.
They have a lobster taco brunch dish I really wanted to try, but she was just in an anti egg mood.
So maybe next time.
