forgive me if i'm off-base on this --my friends pointed this out after the play occurred and i didn't notice what happened at the time.

was the play were mettenberger wasn't expecting the snap and we turned over possession flagged for a false start? if so, then that is a dead ball foul, which would've negated the play and fumble. but, according to my friends, bama declined the penalty, which should have resulted in repeating the down, rather than assuming the result of the play which was never live to begin with.

anybody else notice that this happened? like i said, i didn't notice this during the game, so let me know if this wasn't the case. i'm not trying to be sour grapes or anything, but it would be a pretty significant officiating faux pas.

I did too, it was a dead ball foul, so Alabama should have never gotten the fumble...5 yrd penalty and repeat the down

Does it really matter at this point. The refs did not cost LSU this game.

They called it illegal motion, not false start.

Not sure if that was the proper call or not, but that's why it wasn't a dead ball.

Illegal motion. Mett moving as the ball was snapped. Not a dead ball foul.

bro, i'm not saying that it would have affected the game significantly. but the fair and correct application of the rules is a pretty important issue.

a false start is a dead ball penalty. Everything ceases once the false start is called. You can decline it, but no team in the history of the sport has declined a false start penalty.

Accept the penalty = tack on 5 yards replay the down
decline the penalty = replay the down (would never happen)

I was at the game. I didnt see a penalty. was one thrown? if it was an illegal formation or shift, then we are talking about something completely different. Hell, I dont remember the ref even making a call on that play

They called illegal shift on mett.
Bama sucked at showing decent replays, until they were reviewing if they had a TD or not. Outside of that, they rarely showed replays at all.
when i watched it later that night, looked as if no one jumped before it was snapped so it wasn't offsides.

A false start's never been declined because you can't decline a false start.

It wasn't a false start. It was an illegal shift. Not a dead ball foul.

My God, are people really this dumb?

The play in question was not a false start. Mettenberger was moving toward the center when the ball was snapped, making him an illegal man in motion. It is just like when a receiver or running back who is moving toward the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball is called for illegal motion. Illegal motion is not a dead ball foul and the defense has the option to accept or decline.

Very obviously the correct call by the official.

Actually, it was illegal motion (not to split hairs). Slight difference.

From the play-by-play account..

quote:

TEAM rush up middle for no gain to the LS27, fumble by TEAM recovered by UA Trey DePriest at LS27, PENALTY LS illegal motion declined.

Can only be moving laterally with the LOS when ball is snapped. Mett was moving forward, not a dead ball foul.

Idk if you can. Have you ever seen a ref ask the coach? Because they normally just make the call. They normally ask coaches on other penalties
