I've already killed a bigger buck off this place last week. There is a good chance that I'll be leaving the area after this year. I know he is really young and has a chance to be something special in a couple. Should I take him or let him walk in case I come back in a year or two.

Enjoy watching him and pick off a few of his bitches if you need some meat later in the season.

If I didn't plan on hunting the area next year, I'd kill him

The answer to your question depends on what stage you are in your hunting. Are you ready to let a "nice" (but immature/young) buck walk or do you feel the need to shoot a buck that by most accounts is not really a "trophy?" The issue of where you hunt next year is moot to me. Personally, I'd let him walk as he's a young buck. My decision is the same whether: I'm hunting the same lease next year or not; I'm hunting on my personal land; I'm hunting on public land. The bitter truth truth is that w/o having a LOT of acreage or high fences, a lot of the bucks I pass on at my private property will be shot by someone else on neighboring property.

I would let him walk unless you hate the other guys on the lease.

I would let him walk unless you hate the other guys on the lease or they already hate you. Shooting that buck just because you are leaving means you don't care at all about the guys still there.

Not a lease, just a little strip of woods surrounded by bean fields. No other hunters for about 5 miles unless you count spotlighters. Ive tried to get the landowner to hunt here but with only 4 days of slug he's not interested.

TOH thats my problem, im not sure where im at yet. I know he could end up very special, looks like great genetics and nutrition in this area is a given. I just have a very low doe density in this area. I let him walk last week waiting on my big boy. Ill try to wait again, but as trapping gets closer it will be tough.

Ps any guess on age?

Do you need meat? Can you still bag a doe to meet the meat need? How many bucks have you seen that are legal to shoot and are their older ones with less racks around?

The only reason to shoot if you don't need the meat is you consider it a wall hanger. Would you shoulder mount that small 8?

From that angle, he looks kinda skinny w/ a light frame. On the basis of that pic, I'd go w/ 2 1/2, as well.

Let him walk again tonight. I actually do need some more for the freezer, but hoping for the does to show up again soon. I havent even got one on camera for a couple of weeks now.

In response to a previous post, he is now the oldest buck on cam. Deer density is very low here, the ones here can grow huge but just not many around.

I think you did the right thing. Unless you see less than 2-3 deer a year at this place, he wouldn't be the 1 I'm taking.
