Other than the obvious Saving Private Ryan.

Twelve O'Clock High
Best Years of Our Lives
Mister Roberts
Stalag 17
The Third Man
All classics. Anyone who hasn't seen them shouldn't consider himself a film buff.

-Come and See
Not only is it the greatest WWII movie but it is the best war film ever made. Period. It also has my favorite ending shot ever.
-Grave of the Fireflies
Without a doubt, the most emotionally powerful war movie ever made. It will eat your heart out, spit it out, and eat it again
My other favorites:
Ballad of a Soldier
Ivan's Childhood
Rome Open City
Army of Shadows
Soldier of Orange
Cross of Iron
The Big Red One
Au Revoir Les Enfants
The Thin Red Line
The ones I would highly recommend for anyone are Army of Shadows and Soldier of Orange. The former is about the French Resistance and the latter is about the Dutch Resistance. They are incredibly tense movies that anybody could enjoy (if you don't mind subtitles that is).

Downfall, Das Boot, Stalingrad, When Trumpets Fade is alright.
Also, while not strictly relating to the war itself, I think Sophie Scholl is also an excellent film and relevant enough for this discussion.
