Oldboy (2003) - **SPOILERS IN THREAD**
Posted by 1SaintsFan on 11/9/13 at 9:45 am01
On the recommendation of the M/TVB, I spent my Friday night watching this.
When the reason he was imprisoned was revealed I was disgusted yet knew somehow I was in for some hellish revenge style action...
However, I went from disgusted to nearly turning the movie off when they reveal that Dae-Su had been frickING HIS DAUGHTER!
For the hammer scene, the squid eating and action alone I can see why some of you enjoyed this movie. But for those of you who say "OMGZ I LURVE THIS MOVIE", you need serious psychiatric help.
A South Korean incest action movie.
To think they are remaking this shite is even more ridiculous.

If by retarded meaning I don't like a movie that depicts two separate scenes with Rated R style incest then yes, I am proud to be retarded.

It's from 2003. Hopefully there are no idiots around expecting a thread about a ten year old movie to be spoiler free.

The fact that the movie can be so powerful to totally disgust you and make you feel totally uncomfortable is one of the main things that makes this a great movie. Great art should make you feel (something). This movie does that in spades. And the cinematography is absolutely stunning.

Don't be such a pussy. I've seen exploitation movies that are far more graphic.

that's, you know, kind of the point. revenge isn't always so black and white, good, and you can do horrible things
this had a reverse revenge angle that ties into the original cause for the revenge. an ironic twist

i think people often think that movies are only told to tell a positive tale, somewhat defending or attempting to proliferate the message of the movie. lots of people end up detesting detestable endings, thinking that the movie is pushing that message
they completely miss that the whole point of the terrible ending is a lesson. sometimes lessons have bad endings

Incest should make anyone uncomfortable...I'd call it an easy shock value, I wouldnt call it art.

incest wasn't chosen b/c of the inherent shock value in incest. they could have picked a number of shocking endings
incest was chosen b/c of how it fit in with the story and the way they executed the reveal

Koreans are a fricked up people in general. Incest in movies is a lot more common over there.

They could've chosen incest because it was shocking, then wrote the story around it.
Eta: I usually don't give Asian movies the benefit of the doubt, they just always seem to be fricked up to me in some way.

Oh really? You were there when they wrote the script?

How does anything I wrote sound like I'm stating it as a fact? "Could've" means it's a possibility.

A South Korean incest action movie.
You missed the point. Clearly.

I think it was pretty obvious from the start that she was his daughter. Really, as soon as I figured out that the sushi waitress was the love interest, it didn't seem like a stretch from all the other fricked up things I saw in the movie.

Great post. Honestly I'd say 99% of people are like this. They always expect a positive or happy ending, and get confused when it doesn't happen. This mostly leads to the public hating the film, but snobs like us know better.
