Dad Calls Cops on Son to Teach Him a Lesson, Cops Shoot Son Dead

LINK

quote:

A 19-year-old has been shot dead by police after his father dialed 911 to report his truck stolen in order to teach his son a lesson for driving off to buy cigarettes.

quote:

Police reported that during the chase with the teenager, Comstock rammed Officer McPherson’s car.

Once the truck had stopped, the teenager refused to turn it off and revved the engine.

Six shots were fired into the truck by the officer with two shots killing the 19-year-old, according to the medical examiner.

Don't see how that could be used as a rationalization for murdering the kid.

wtf is up with cops these days?

is it because cops get paid shite so the labor pool is also shit?

Is it more related to police culture? If so, then what aspects of the culture?

Or is the protocol they work under too flexible in terms of how they treat suspects?

That one.

They are militarized now and have institutionalized an us vs them attitude towards those they used to 'serve and protect'.

This. They have an us versus them attitude towards the citizenry. The are not part of their communities. Also the militarization of the police force. Everyone with a badge thinks he on Seal Team 6 strapping up to get Bin Laden everyday they go to work.

us vs them attitude

It breeds fear and leads to trigger-fingers.
The worst ones are scared shitless on the job.
To be fair, I could never deal with perps, and don't understand the totality of their job stress.
These stories are everywhere.

Did u read the article?

Kid ran from the cops, almost ran over pedestrians, rammed cop car,and once stopped did not turn off engine but instead was revving engine....so at this point it is too early to say that the police were absolutely wrong here. Lets wait until more details come out.

Btw, your title and post are very misleading

I realize what the kid did was stupid. He revved the engine and refused to get out of the truck.

But shoot him? I've spotted Jeeps flying up muddy hills, dry rocky hills, and just about any arse hauling rev limiter popping situation and its really not that hard to get out of the way.

I couldn't shoot someone for that.

I've been waiting for this to get posted here and I was going to do it myself sometime soon but was waiting for more national media to pick it up. This happened close to me in Ames, Iowa... people here are not happy with the cops.

Besides the killing the guy, the cops led the high speed chase through the middle of Iowa State campus during school hours. The chase started outside of the campus grounds.

Yes, the dead guy is a dangerous moron who did a stupid thing, but it's the cops that turned the situation 1) very dangerous with pedestrians in danger and 2) shot an unarmed person in a truck in the middle of the campus.

his dad is obviously devastated saying he wish he didn't call the cops and just gone after his son himself

funeral is tomorrow

dont shoot until the perp threatens a life

revving the engine is not a reason

Stupid cops think they have to shoot every time. at least set the phasers to stun.

If you are going to call cops, you've got to be in life or death situation bc you just can't trust their judgment. Just don't know what some of those fools will do. It's something every day.

"They also say he was trying to get his life back on track."

The families of 90% of the murder victims in NO seem to say the victims have been getting their lives back on track when they are shot by some other miscreant.

quote:

A lesson about not buying cigarettes took a tragic turn this week after a father reported his truck stolen when his son took off to buy a pack -

That doesn't seem to be the lesson at all:

Don't ram police vehicles and your chances of getting shot by the cops are greatly improved. Getting rammed by a-holes isn't part of "to serve and protect" IMHO.

Or don't accuse your kid of auto theft if you are pissed at him going to go get cigarettes. I suspect the dad didn't level on the circumstances of the kid being in possession of the vehicle.

The problem is the lack of accountability. At most these cops will lose their jobs. They should get prison time but they won't. This is so often the case I'm sure police officers believe there are no repercussions for their decisions.

I can't imagine what that father is going through.

Cop should not have lethal options in ordinary circumstances.

They could have easily taken out tires, but nope, gotta shoot the kid dead to be safe.

here's the dash cam video (which I am glad they released)

LINK

it shows both sides of the argument...the kid rammed the cop cars a lot trying to get away, but at the part where he gets shot you can't really see anything or know what happens. they claim he revved the engine so that's what justifies the shooting

it's definitely not as egregious as the headline and story in OP makes it sound, but its still a sad situation.

The cops sound like typical trigger happy cops, but this is fricked up. Your kid comes home from a few days in jail and you call the cops on him because he borrowed your truck to get a pack of smokes? Just whip his arse when he comes back home.

Maybe.

I am just so suspicious of police officers when a citizen is killed by the barrel of a cop gun.

Fundamentally I don't think revving a car engine should mean that its okay to kill someone.
