Is it totally new characters? I don't see how they can continue the story of the characters from 1-3.

Obviously it features new characters but in the same universe. Whether it is pre or post ME 1-3 remains to be seen, I hope it is post.

If it's going to be post they'll have to make it pretty far into the future to make the endgame choices in me3 less noticeable.

Some of those pics almost seem like relics... and the first pic looks like pretty advanced technology. I'm guessing either far into the future or very recent pre-me1

You have do remember the Protheans had more advanced technology than any species in the original ME trilogy. I kind of want the game to be pre-ME trilogy.

You would have to go extremely far into the future for a post trilogy game because of the mass relays are gone. Mass Effect's space travel doesn't work without those.

They still have FTL without the relays

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that even without relay travel the Mass Effect ships are faster than Star Trek ones. So really space traveling society could still work, it would just be confined to certain areas of the universe. Remember that Mass Effect spanned the entire universe, so traveling to nearby stars would still be feasible

Also the Protheans were able to build a mini relay (the Conduit). Given enough time the relays could still be rebuilt

Which is why I would prefer a pre-mass relay destruction version. The universe is too awesome to limit IMO

Play them all back to back with the same character. So much fun

Or just put it far into the future when they've been rebuilt

The story of how the universe reconnected would be a lot more interesting than any pre-me1 story

Anything that features as a prequel to ME1-3 would be sad, because no matter what that character does in the universe it obviously had little effect on the arrival of the Reapers. BioWare has already created an antagonist that threatens the entire galaxy, anything they could come up with pre-ME1 would pale in comparison.

Yeah I'd like this. I just think there a lot of pre-reaper stories that could make a great game. The First contact war for example

Oh and this is going to be awesome

I think the First Contact War has a lot of promise. Imagine having turians as avowed enemies. Making allies with the asari, meeting the volus for the first time, etc. Geth would be enemies again as well.

I want to get more into how Humans found the relays and started integrating all the technology into their society.

First Contact War would be great as well. They could do 3 games around it.

Finding the relay could start it.

Ugh, don't you guys see the futility of going back into the past? We know what happens in the first contact war and nothing the character does will change that. I want a new adventure where I'm not bound by retconning the past.

I kinda agree with this. It's possible to make a good prequel game, but knowing that your ultimate defeat was inevitable would be a real bummer. If it was a prequel it would have to circle around a conflict completely apart from the Reapers, IMO. The Rachni could be interesting, I suppose.

ETA: And even though that too has a predetermined ending, at least this way it's a favorable outcome. How the game's storyline takes you there could be open-ended. That might work.
