Maybe this is why Olin Kreutz didn't last with us.

quote:

Former Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer joined Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes on Wednesday to discuss his history with being bullied in an NFL locker room.“The first year I filled in for (Brian) Urlacher when he was on injured reserve (in 2004) for a large part of the year, I hated coming into work because of Olin (Kreutz.) He was a jerk. He was riding me because I was the third-year guy, or second-year guy trying to fill in for a super star. I can relate in the sense that you’re going to have people in your workplace that you don’t necessarily like.

If Yall remember Olin broke the jaw of teammate Fred Miller in an off-the-field field incident right before he left the Bears.

It was horrible that he just quit.
I hope and expect he went home and punched himself in the face.

TP story

"There is a level of respect that you give to the guys that came before you," Strief said. "Now, the talk of a $15,000 trip, that's too much. I'm sorry, that's too much. Now, me and Jahri did a rookie dinner where we took these guys out, and I'll tell you what, we did it as best as we could. And we spent good money on it, and we had a great time. And that was as much of a thank you from us for the things that the older guys teach you ...

"We've also had people that absolutely refused to pay for anything. Now, that guy didn't get taped to a goal post, but that guy also wasn't everybody's best friend. Because we all did it. Again, it's not something where we're holding you down and forcing you -- and not to mention, you're gonna get it back over the course of your career anyways. ... But there's definitely a line."

I was thinking of the goal post taping when this story happened.

It goes to show that there's a level of hazing that's ok.
No one seems to mind getting taped.

You just have to know not to go over the line.

getting taped, carrying pads, paying for dinner, etc. that's all the norm around the league. I have no problem with that, its good bonding and a little hazing that is all good and fun. look at vaccaro's face.

Now the shite that's been in the news, thats just fricked up.

there's some ripe stories from Saints camps of old.

One of my favorites- first camp in 1967, rookies were on the 2nd floor of the dorm they were staying in. Past bedtime they were still playing music. Crusty veteran Doug Atkins pulled out a shotgun and shot it out the window up towards the 2nd floor. They moved the next night and there was never any late music again.

a lot of it is a parody of what used to happen at this point - so its a bit easier to laugh off. and like strief says, i think A dinner can easily be chalked up to "im new, i want to get to know all of you and be a part of the group, thanks for taking the time to take interest in my well being with the team" --- shouldnt be forced, but in that boat id likely do it without it even being asked.

whats tough is that the line of joking around between friends can vary widely individual to individual and in these cases not all coworkers are even remotely friends.

plus the idiots that go ENTIRELY to far, but i think thats generally not common.

Trust me I get it. I was in a fraternity that hazed a bunch so I understand that ultimately it brings people together. However, with the NFL being such a huge industry, at what point do the owners step in and try to stop this. They are paying these rookies pretty good money, albeit not as much as in the past, and the hazing must put stress on these players(mentally and physically) that could affect their on the field performance.

Don't be a pussy. JK. No seriously. It is different because in a fraternity you don't have to join but these guys have no real choice. I just think it is dumb in the NFL considering the amount of money that is on the line.

while we may disagree some on the greek issue - ill agree very much that players have no choice to be there, and there is entirely too much invested in them to be messing around with anything that risks a guy feeling alienated, out of place, or like he doesnt trust the guy next to him.
