Never deer hunted with a shotgun but we recently moved a stand to a spot that I think is too tight for a scoped rifle. I have an old 870 wingmaster that only takes 2 3/4 shells. What is my realistic range and what size shot should I use?

Don't even recall what buckshot I was using, but killed my first buck in swamps off Tangipahoa River at almost 100 yards w an 870 20 gauge. Still don't know how..

00 buck

Good out to 50 yards easily. A little better than a bow. I've heard of a lot longer shots being made, but 50 yds and in you can basically hold on their withers and do work on them.

Try out the Remington buckshot in 00 buck. Great for 30 yards and will knock email out even further

I would give slugs a try too. I was planning on shooting slugs out of my crack barrel 20 ga for primitive season but it doesn't look like I'll be off of work. You can get more range out of a slug than buckshot. If you do decide to give them a try and your gun is smooth bore, make sure you get slugs for a smooth bore and not the cool looking hornady sabots, sabots are made for slug guns.

Thanks.....yeah it's a smooth bore. I need to spend some time at the range with the 50 yard target. Take 00 and slugs and see what I'm more comfortable with.

My first deer

20 gauge single shot

00 buck

Deer dropped like a sack of potatoes

BTW: 0 is the biggest shot but fewer pellets

000 has more shot but smaller pellets

I like to meet in the middle

I'm tellin you put the bb where his head meets his neck and you will not have to track it with 4B or any other buck shot.

Other than the "easily" I'm in this camp.

00 buck, 35 to 50 yard shots, if you're confident.

Who stalks and takes deer at these ranges anymore?

Doesn't everybody set up on baited, cleared lanes and take whitetails at 500 yards with .270 or .30-06 Remington 700s?

Normally I'd say 00 but if you have a 2 3/4 limit you may wanna go to something a hair smaller for more pellets. I've killed one with 3 1/2 00 at 50 or so yards. Had to shoot through a bush and only got 2 pellets on target but it ran about 10 steps before cutting a flip.

#1 buck patterned the best in my a-5 so that's what I use no complaints. Killed one at 100 yards with em granted I did shoot 11 times connecting with 5 pellets. Of course now I rarely carry more than 5 shells and don't even think about shots at that range. Different times I guess an we man drive a couple times a year instead of a 100.

One of my boys got a doe through some brush at about 75-80 yds with my 870 firing 2 3/4" 00 buckshot. Only 1 pellet hit, but that's all it took. Bitch dropped dead.
