This. He was THE key piece to the 2009 defense, without which, there would be no Super Bowl title.

Sharper caused turnovers and Vilma was the anchor in the middle in 2009.

Without them no SB for sure.

Payton spent the first 5 minutes of Thursday presser talking about Vilma

Basically said it was worth the chance (using the IR return designation) for a player of Vilma's caliber.

Another player I hope we see attached to the Saints in the future in some capacity. There's quality players and there are quality players that are quality people. Thanks JV for your role in defining what championship football is in nawlins.

I like how Payton said "He's one of those players you have to drag off the field." Mentioned Brian Young as similar, who now is on the Saints coaching staff. "Bring me all the Jon Vilma's you have."

"Tough times don't last, but tough people do. Thanks for the support everyone!!" -- Saints linebacker Jon Vilma (@JonVilma51), 10:47 a.m. Thursday.

Coach Sean Payton on Vilma, "I’ve said this before, he has been what Drew (Brees) has been to our offense to our defense. You are always going to go the extra mile with a player like that.”

Said during the presser yesterday.
