Coach Payton, here's my thoughtful post of the day: Our team is very well-coached, well motivated and well disciplined. If we have any problem, it's with the roster. Some of the players are not as athletically capable as they should be to play for the New Orleans Saints. Some of the players possess insufficient ability to play championship NFL ball.

I think there has to be a mindset change for the running game to work.

Fact is, any team plays better with a lead. This passing game can often provide that, so Payton wants to crank it up and jump on top as fast as he can. You cannot fault him for that.

But the running game needs real attention. Looking to run early is good IF it works. But HOW do you try to get it done? It seems the Saints run to compliment the pass without really looking to maximize how they run it...their strengths while attacking weaknesses. The run calls need to be creative (blocking setup; inside versus outside calls) to get it going early and force the opponent to not only think about it but be concerned that it can hurt them.

It's common sense. If the D respects the running game, it slows down the pass rush and sets up play-action. It makes the whole passing attack better.

Payton has done this before. He is capable of finding ways to run just as well as he can to throw. He has to commit to it (says he will now) so that his team believes they must and will do it. We'll see, because the Saints are not going through this gauntlet of good defenses coming up after Dallas (aka playoff type teams) much less the postseason if they keep throwing 51 times to 13 runs like they did against the Jets (and especially not on the road).

I think the passing success sets up the run by spreading out the defense..as well as building a lead. That the run sets up the pass seems pathetically written in concrete. Fix the offensive line..that what's crucial. If I only knew where does one acquire a quality OL outside of the draft.

Run from passing formations..don't bring a runner in and have everyone in the known universe know he's going to get the ball. No running on first and second down..having to throw on the third. Unless you have Adrian Peterson, you'll never win like that.
