Currently have a 22' blazer bay 2200 with a older model motorguide 109# 36v thats crapping out on me. Going to upgrade to a Minn Kota iPilot, my batteries are 5+ years old so going to swap them out when I upgrade, considering dropping down to the 24v 80# thrust model to save some cash and I see alot of people with 21-22' boats with 70-80# motors and don't have a problem.

What does the OB think, should I just pony up the extra cash to have overkill on power or will the 80# suffice??

I had a 19' Nautic Star with an 80 lb TM. I bitched about not having a 101 lb all the time. :)

If I could redo it, I'd go with the 101#. Our 80# MK has trouble with the current at times.

I have a TR21 with an 84lb thrust 24v that does just fine. With gel cells I can go all day no problem.

You can't have too much trolling motor. I wouldn't downsize but that's me

What kind of batteries do you have that last 5+yrs?

I don't know if its smart or not, but getting ready to replace our MK 80# with an iPilot (I think)...

and going to go back with an 80#.

When the old one was working it seemed pretty capable. I really just don't feel like adding a battery.

PS: Will call your neighbor this weekend while we're down there.

It's fine in nearly every situation, but when the tide is rushing out of a few of my favorite canals, it inches forward.

Blazers are pretty stout hulls. Need some arse on the trolling motor. Stick with the 36v

This is my thought, just trying to pinch pennies and going to the OB for wisdom to talk me out of it

Minn Kota replacing the 101 with a 112 model in a couple weeks, will go ahead and lock one in!

I'm guessing around 5 years, guy I bought boat from a year ago said they were 2-3 years old which I took as meaning around 3-4. Will prob just try and run new motor on them and see how it does at first before doing a $500 battery swap.

I have a 17' alum bass boat with a 74# thrust, and I wish it was bigger. Go with the 101.

ETA: get the 112 instead.

Get the MinnKota SW series 82lb thrust. Performs wayyy better than my MG. I have it on a 20 ft Mako and it pulls no problem. I abuse the shite out of it.

bigger is better is always the case with trolling motors. Had a a MG 106 on 21 baypro and never thought it was too little. now it is on the 23V Kenner and I wish it was bigger.

This, for sure. You never know when you will need the extra power.

I respectfully disagree. You have an additional batter to maintain and go bad every six months if you're like me! I swear I've been through 8 batteries in the past 1.5 years. If I had another battery, that would add another 33% chance of battery failure. Eff that.

36 v - you can never have too big a TM.

additional benefit is that 36 v does not draw the battery down like a 24 v does. So you maintain top power much longer.

36 volts is superior in every way. your batteries should last several years. charge every time you use them. top off with water every so often. I put the felt rings on the terminals and coat with Vaseline or dielectric grease. make sure they are strapped down also. and should have nuts not wing nuts on the posts. if you leave the wing nuts on tighten with a pare of channel locks and be damn careful not to let the handle hit the other post.

We have a new 80lb on our 22' pathfinder. I'd say this is going to be minimum as the blazer weighs a few hundred pounds more.

I've got a 101 lb. Fortrex on my bass boat and it's only 20'. It would be hard to go back to an 80 lb. motor. With a boat as big as yours, I can't imagine you being happy dropping down to an 80.
