I've been shooting the infamous Rem 7400 for about 15 years, and its been decent to me. But i've been looking for a new Bolt Action for awhile, in the 400-500 range.

Last night my folks call, and told me to go pick out whatever rifle i want, their treat, under 1k. Obviously this opens up my selection a bit, and i need some opinions. I know most already know what these rifles look like, but pics are included for your viewing pleasure.

I know this could turn into a Ford vs Chevy thread, but what would the OB choose from this list??? Caliber will be 270 WSM or 7mm MAG, but i prefer the short action if possible. I'm sure any of these would be great choices, and will shoot better than i can. Leaning to the ABolt vs. Tikka from reading reviews/appearance.

Winchester 70

Tikka Hunter

Ruger M77

Browning ABolt

Remington 700 CDL

Weatherby Lazermark

Does not compute. Even a decent shaped used gun will be close to $2,000.

The Weatherby Mark V is the best of the guns you've listed and you may be able to find the Sporter model at your price point. No short mags available, only Weatherby/Remington/Win long mags.

Odds are the tikka will be the most accurate out of the box. They have a 1 MOA guarantee. If it doesn't shoot 1 MOA or less, they will fix it. None of the others have that.

That said, I'd take the ruger and weatherby off the list and then pick whatever one you like best.

I would go Rem or Tikka then the Ruger next. Browning would be my last choice.

My top 3 would be:

Winchester 70

Weatherby Lazermark (ETA: And I'm with the guy who thinks this is going to be over budget.)

Browning A-Bolt

Looks like the Weatherby I was looking at is a Vanguard with a Mark V stock.

Cabelas

I have always wanted a Tikka, but the Abolt is the best looking gun i found, for ANY price

I'm not discounting appearance and pride of ownership - I'm really not. But you've now mentioned appearance twice.

That would be about my 20th priority in a rifle. I'm not going to beat you up about it further, as to each his own. Good luck with it.

Those guns were released in 2012 and I'd be a bit surprised if they arent sold out. Weatherby does a contract with Cabelas every couple of years and they may be back around soon. Anyhow, the smaller Vanguard action is made by Howa in Japan while the larger Mark V action is made in the US. The Vanguard is a good gun and a great value for the accuracy the deliver.

As a Weatherby loyalist I love the Mark V but admit the Vanguard is a very good gun at an attractive price. Since Mark V is out of the picture I'd go Tikka or A-Bolt...

I'm with you man. But at this point, thats all the information i have. Which is precisely the reason i'm asking folks that might have experience with different brands. I value most of the honest opinions on this board.

I've owned all of those other than the Weatherby and the Tikka is my favorite. The Tikka isn't a pretty gun, but I don't give a shite what a gun looks like and neither have the deer I've killed it.
