I want something well made for less than $1000. I don't give a shite about bells and whistles. Just a solid rifle to kill some zombies with.
I don't know anything about the different manufacturers so which one's are decent and which one's are garbage?

Easy answer is build it for that price. However, I've heard good things about this one.

If you can stretch your budget a little bit you can get an AR from one of the best manufacturers. This BCM has cheaper furniture (stock, handguard, etc.) , but the guts are top notch.

So BCM is good stuff huh? Solid guts are what I'm looking for. I can upgrade stock and stuff later on. May have to think about spending a bit more.

Find one of those combo deals for him on Palmento state. He will need an optic too and isnt taking this into his budget.

Do they sell them with iron sights? I'm fine with that for now. I can get a good optic later.

They do. I just prefer to have a nice sight on my rifles. Maybe you would enjoy a .22lr AR and a decent sight? Much cheaper to shoot and will be a good starter for you in the AR game.

I just feel more comfortable with them. I know how to shoot the weapon just fine. 13 years in the Corps. I just don't really know anything about the civilian brands. Marine Corps gave me a rifle. I shot the rifle.

This will be my first gun purchase. Never fired anything outside of the military outside of fricking around with some buddies a few times. First time I ever pulled the trigger on anything was boot camp. I really don't know much about guns other than the M16 and Berreta 9mm.

I still stand by the idea of getting a .22lr. It will be much cheaper to shoot and you will in return want to go shoot more often. You can buy a .22lr AR and a lifetime of ammo for the price of a BCM.

Well you know gun safety, accuracy, and how to kill things. I'd say you're pretty far along. The only thing Dale Earnhardt put together on the car was the driver's seat padding, but he sure as hell could get around a track.
Good luck and thanks for your service.

If I were to build one, how much would that save me? Do you get a better end product for the cost? Do you need to be a trained gunsmith or have any special tools or is it just a matter of buying the parts you want and putting them together?

Like putting together Legos. The upper requires some special tools. Many people buy a completed upper, lower parts kit, and lower and build...
