contrary to some on here, esp the younger ones, nick saban did not create LSU as a national power. he did not "make" LSU. LSU was not a dismal program before he came and resurrected it.
nick saban is not the reason LSU has a great program now.

but nick saban was very important for LSU's climb back from the years of mediocre head coaching. gerry dinardo had already built the "fence" and was recruiting louisiana very well and the talent was there for a good coach to come in and take the team to higher ground. but LSU's weaknesses were....

1)a meddling administration and "good ole boy" network around the state that wanted to have a voice in the program.

2)low coaching pay scales. this create a conundrum when hiring a new coach; LSU simply would not pay for top new talent, head coach or asst. coaches

3)money. no taf. there was no long term plan for funding athletic teams and title 9 (?) required lots of money be spent on non revenue generating womans sports.

so saban came in and "taught" the administration you get what you pay for. if LSU wanted to be periniel (sp) top 10 again they had to raise the funds necessary to expand and improve the facilities, including a state of the art academic center and enough funds to attract top coaches. when LSU won the NC in '03 (remember, saban had lost FIVE games the year before) the tide turned. LSU now knew he was correct. of course saban had already stepped on lots of good ole boy toes and now he could stomp on them.

that's what saban did for us. he was a good head coach but not near as good as he is now. without the NC the program may not have got the jump start it needed; saban's body of work alone simply was not good enough nor than outstanding. in fact, miles is miles ahead of him in many regards, esp not getting shite stomped like every saban team but one did. florida, auburn, alabama and others beat the crap out of us on at least one occasion ( i mean by 4 or 5 td's).

LSU also taught saban that college football riches are in the south (mostly) and that the recruiting and fan support are simply the best. LSU most definately helped make his career. he earned it but if he would have taken a different job his career might never have really launched imo. LSU was indeed a giant just awakening from a series of lousy HC decisions.

Wasn't he paid something like 1 or 2 million a year?
What's Les's salary?
Morons are making decisions at LSU. Morons.

Nick started making $1.2m here. Apples to oranges comparison to today's salaries.

LSU has a great history but we were never really anything in the modern era. We had a very good year now and then, but were steadily 15-50 ( or lower during Curley). Nick made us an elite program. Big difference from where we were historically to where we are now.

Not a Miles hater, but lets not pretend we were elite prior to 2000.

Since us young people are the intended audience of this post, I was hoping you could let me know around what age I can expect to become senile enough to actually believe all this bullshite?

Simply put, your whole statement is moronic. Saban built the program that we have today he was a great coach then and still is. He put 50,000 of his own dollars to jump start the academic building. He demanded and got upgrades not only to the football facilities but all the other sports facilities as well. I can't even name all the improvements that he started before he left. As I stated before. When he retires from coaching, LSU should offer him the AD position. Because he is personally responsible for restructuring our entire athletic department.

I don’t really care what Saban was or was not at LSU. But, I just can't abide delusions of this fan base.
quote:

LSU was not a dismal program before he came and resurrected it

Saban became head coach 2000. In 1998 LSU was 4-7, 2-6 in conference. In 1999 was 3-8, 1-7 in conference. That’s pretty dismal… and the rest of the decade was little better (see below).
quote:

if LSU wanted to be perennial (sp) top 10 again…

Surely you jest? LSU had NEVER been “perennial top 10.” Not once in the previous decade had LSU ever finished ranked in the top 10 in the country. Good God.. between 1970 and 2000, only twice was LSU ranked in the top 10 during that 30 year stretch. You have to go back to Cholly Mac era in the early ‘60s to find LSU "perennially ranked in the top 10."

LSU records in decade before Saban

LSU Football History 1990 - 1999
Season Coach Record Bowl Game Final Ranking

1990 Mike Archer 5-6 (2-5)
1991 Curley Hallman 5-6 (3-4)
1992 Curley Hallman 2-9 (1-7)
1993 Curley Hallman 5-6 (3-5)
1994 Curley Hallman 4-7 (3-5)
1995 Gerry DiNardo 7-4-1 (4-3-1) Independence Bowl
1996 Gerry DiNardo 10-2 (6-2) Peach Bowl final AP rank 12
1997 Gerry DiNardo 9-3 (6-2) Independence Bowl final AP rank 13
1998 Gerry DiNardo 4-7 (2-6)
1999 Gerry DiNardo 3-8 (1-7)

Whatever Saban was or wasn't at LSU, he DID "restore" a program that was not just in decline, it had declined to the bottom of the SEC. It is probably more accurate to say "He created a program..." as there was nothing, history or precedent, to "restore" to. Hate the man all you want... but don't deny what he accomplished.

Oh, dear Lord! Face it. Les is a clown. Has always been a clown, and will always be a clown. I realize he's not going anywhere anytime soon, so let's just enjoy the ride, lower our expectations to third in the SECW, and pray for a Cotton Bowl berth; it's the best we can expect for some time to come.

This is true and if you disagree explain how he didn't make it at Michigan State. I do give him some credit, but having the talent established by Dinardo, the administration run by Mark Emmert to keep the good ole boy network in check and produce the funds needed to be successful was absolutely necessary.

On a side note, I am pretty amazed at how many jump to support him. Clueless I tell ya. He does not deserve ALL the credit he gets

You surely cannot be serious? Dude, look at the record of LSU under Dinardo ... What are you doing ... trying to re-write history? LSU was pitiful and desparate, at the BOTTOM of the SEC with Vandy and Kentucky when Saban came in.

Now I know you are freaking either stupid or dellusional. Why don't you look at his record at Sparty, and Sparty's record before he arrived before you just spout...

Dinardo actually recruited very well right before his departure. He did leave some talent on the team, that is well-known.
