#1stNightOverreactions

I liked a lot of things I saw last night, and yes, we were missing one of our best scorers. We win that game with Ryno playing.

But it is pretty obvious to just about anyone this team is going to look pretty different than the one that is surrounding Davis for our legitimate playoff runs.

Aminu played pretty well defensively and rebounding the ball, but he can't and will never be a guy that can score the ball. We also have literally no depth at that position. There are no other legitimate SFs on the roster. I know the plan is to give minutes to Tyreke there, but I would still like to see another traditional SF on the roster that is worth...something.

And the 5. Yeah. It has been discussed to death.

My point is, I think Davis and Jrue are our only two untouchables at this point. I think that Dell will still deal and look to keep remaking this roster.

At some point this year, I think we will be forced to trade for a subpar but serviceable 5, and/or possibly a scoring 3. This offseason we will definitely spend the MLE on another 5. The wildcard is Withey.

I like what we've done so far. I like Jrue a lot. I like that we have some assets that other teams might want. Still a long way to go but we are moving in the right direction.

Trading for a subpar 5 this season is the quickest way to mediocrity though. Get Ryan back, spread the floor and let these young guys mesh.

The 2nd group with just Reke out there is not a very good bunch.

While I don't disagree, that's what I see happening.

Monty is too stubborn to play Withey. I kind of like what I saw in Arinze last night in a limited role, but he can only play when paired with a PF that can score in Davis or Anderson.

I'd say we have some decent parts on the 2nd unit, such as Roberts, Morrow, Reke, etc.

Problem is that, with no Ryno, we're stuck with Lance Thomas et all in the big man spots and that's a big farking gap, scoring-wise.

I think the board stayed pretty level headed last night. We have Ryno last night and it's a W. I'm pretty confident in where we're at.

Our 1-8 is fairly strong really, with the one problem being that Smith and Aminu are backups on "really good" teams, not starters. But 9-14....yikes.

The 5 is a weak spot.

But they played one of the biggest and toughest frontcourts in the league. They were missing Anderson, who legitimately changes defenses. And they still outrebounded Indiana, limited them to 6 OREB on 42% shooting, and worked them on the offensive glass with Steimsma/Onuaku playing 29 minutes.

You're absolutely right that this roster will be different when they are hoping to win titles, but there is lots of promise for this season.

I know what the stats say, but just watching the game in person...it was different.

When Steimsma and Onauku were on the floor, you knew they were absolutely no threat to score.

When the 2nd unit was out there, you could tell it just wasn't a playoff team quality 2nd unit. Ideally, we need a better 5 to start, with Smith coming off the bench playing big minutes.

There aren't many teams that can come off the bench with two guys like Evans and Anderson. Mix those guys in with another starter, maybe Morrow hitting 3s, and I think we aren't bad on the second unit.

There are some playoff teams with some really crappy 2nd units. Check out what OKCs throwing out there for example.

Steimsnuaku is scary bad. I'd take Ely/Armstrong every time. And I just threw up.

I'd like to see Evans work out of the post more with the 2s. They did this a couple of times and had success, but didnt go back. That should be a staple of that unit. Roberts, Morrow, Anderson will leave plenty of room to operate, regardless of the 5th guy

Yeah, that joke is being told by everyone.

Also, my toes are inching up onto your Fire Monty bandwagon. I really don't want to overreact, but I don't know if I can see him being the coach for this team when we are trying to make a playoff run. The 3rd Quarter doldrums, the weird rotations, inability to make adjustments...

I think George Karl is the coach of this team next year.

Damn, I thought I came up with that.

I will say, it was a strong Pacer team. They dominated our front court( even though we out offensive rebounded the 15-6).

It's just so disheartening watching the 2nd half debacles. That game was ours. Our opening night, rebrand, sell out crowd, up 14 at half. So frickin frustrating.

The problem is that it is a pattern with Monty led teams. No matter who the players are, what the rotations are, who we are playing...we just suck coming out in the 2nd half.

Dell is probably ringing up Pryzbilla, Jason Collins, Diop, Petro as we speak

Say we end the season with this exact roster, end up getting ninth in the West...what do we do to address our problems?

I'd be on board just to increase my opportunities to say Vanilla Gorilla.
