I hunt with a .30-30 a whole lot and shoot it wayyyyy more than most people. I put at least a box through it a year and I'm always shooting different stuff out of it because the gun is very tolerant of different loads and shoots everything well. I don't bring that gun when I think I might shoot over 100 yards if I can help it.

I've put about 5 boxes through mine just this year so far. It goes to the range even if I think I'm just going to shoot pistols.

I have had the opposite experience as well as a guy that is a 45-70 aficionado on another board.

1) Most people shouldn't be taking 200 yard shots with any caliber, much less one that lobs bullets rather than sends them on a rope.

I am very much aware that it's a sad state of affairs that a 200 yard shot is considered that difficult for the average person. 300yds with iron sights is in no way either difficult yet I know plenty who have no hope of hitting a barn at that range.

2) Most factory loads are pop gun loads and don't bring much with them past 100 yards.

I addressed that issue with hand loads.

Looking now is a bit late and won't tell you much unless you have your own charts to compare data.

No idea what you're talking about, especially since I agree with you on just about everything, but trick or treat was last night, and I was and overweight Jase.

It was, and still is, perfect. Oh, and I see dudes sword fighting all the time. Frikin' weirdos, but they seem to love it.

Oh not implying otherwise. I enjoy the show and entertainment you provide to the board.

Well I'm glad it's worked for yall. I've yet to see it.

Well then you're just some kind of freak marksman. If I was a freak marksman I would probably use my .30-30 for 200 yard shots religiously.

What you're doing is handloading a .30-30 with a spitzer style bullet to higher velocity than usual. I think it's fair to say that you're using something other than what 99.9% of people in the wood stuff in their .30-30s.

No way in hell I'm going to handload just to try and stretch my lever gun to 200+ yards. I have a bolt action with off the shelf bullets that is good to 200 without having to aim over the deers back.

Not hardly, it's just good basics I've worked on for years. It's not a difficult shot for anyone that doesn't wear coke bottles for lenses in their eyewear. Look at all the folks shooting rifles and never get beyond a 100yd zero and then you figure out why some think a 200yd shot is tough. Lot of hunters, even avid hunters, are sorrier shots than they should be.

I think more of us use spire bullets than you think. Many just load in pairs to keep it simple. Sure as heck not putting much more pressure to it because these little rifles don't need it.

There are kids in military training hitting E-type targets at 300yds with iron sights. You telling me you can't even do that...

Sure as hell wasn't talking about a 30-30 there... All I stated was iron sights, 300yds, and a target which for you might as well be in another zip code.

Are we talking about straight up iron sights like the ones that come on damn near every gun, or some fancy shite? I can barely see a plate 300yds away much less hit it consistently

Talking about a decent set of peep-hole iron sights which anyone that has enough time behind a rifle should be able to use.

I thought you were talking about the regular old iron sights that are normally on guns. I still wouldn't be able to hit something I couldn't see.

I could hit a car, but trying to get a heart/lung shot on a deer at 300 is not possible

You should be able to hit a skinny man-sized torso at that range with any scout style rifle and decent iron sights. Certainly not something for hunting but just basic rifle marksmanship which is lacking in most hunters now.

I can hit a man sized target center mass at 300 with iron sights. But accurately hitting the vital area of deer is a little bit different. Within 100 yards it's not a big deal though.
