.30-30 Winchester. Why so unpopular now?
Posted by NatalbanyTigerFan on 10/30/13 at 7:22 pm00
You know there's one in the family somewhere. Either your dad had one or grandpa or brother in law. But you never hear may people hunting with them anymore.
Why is that? I've killed a lot of deer on Raccourci Island with my Dad's ole 30-30. Still a great gun

I have one and use it as a truck gun. I think everyone should keep one loaded and ready while riding around at the camp/ranch. I have taken deer, yotes, hogs, dogs, cats, coons, armadillos.......you get the point. It makes for a nice truck gun because of how easy it is to get the gun from a resting position to out of the window in no time at all.

I dont think the problem lies with the cartridge so much as the lever gun being seen as an inferior or antiquated firearm. I think the same goes for revolvers vs automatics. Like anything else it's always what's new an en vogue. Right now that's high tech looking semi autos and bolt action sporting gun/cartridge combos built well beyond the abilities or needs of the average shooter/hunter.

I think its fun. You hand load cast rounds for plinking and for light stuff like rabbits
or you can zip it up with modern lever evolution and drop deer at 200 yards.

Who says it's unpopular? Not as popular as 30-06 but then nothing else really is that category. Occasionally run into a mouth breather that thinks it's obsolete but it's still being made and it's a versatile, rather inexpensive cartridge that you don't have to worry about getting when mouth breathers make a panic run on ammo.

Fine for short range but only as accurate as the user given type of feed. Also beyond 125-150 yards the bullet drops like a rock and almost worthless. Many far better rounds IF shooting anything but short distance.

Most people that actually take the time to "hunt" have them, and use them. It isn't too popular with people that pay dues to drive up to a box stand over 1000lbs of corn. Just like everything in America today, bigger is better

Still have mine. Dad bought it for me about 35 years ago. I basically just carry it now when tracking. Nice and light

I'm sure more .30-30 bullets are being sold these days than in years past.

I think the lever action rifles are becoming a bit more in vogue than they used to be. Love to get a 1895SBL to match with the Gunsite scout.

The lever action isn't going anywhere. The .30-30 might though. The marlin 336 is the only thing keeping it alive.
Don't get me wrong, I love my pop gun. It's even rumored that the .30-30 is powerful enough to knock down 3 lunch room ladies

It's still my primary hunting rifle. First deer rifle my Dad taught me to hunt with 20 years ago. I'm attached to it.

I agree with this - and speaking of revolver guys, I think the market for levers in .357/.38 and .44, so you can dual purpose the cartridge may outlive the .30-30 itself.

My buddy has a very old winchester in 38-40
I'd give my left pinky toe to own that thing in .357
I think the .30-30 will be far less common a generation from now. My generation doesn't seem to like it all that much. The internet has convinced them that it isn't good for killing deer.

My brother and me are splitting my Dad's gun arsenal. His .30-30 is the only I specifically wanted.
