Rookie poster with a tech issue. My sons Xbox 360 has been giving me problems with the disc tray constantly coming open. Even when the power is off, it'll power on by itself and the tray will open and close rapidly and repeatedly. Anyone else ever had this issue? What solutions do I have besides the obvious of throw it away, buy a playstation, etc? TIA

Going have to replace the whole disc drive. Xboxslave.com will give you the know how. Hardest part is getting into the xbox if it's your first time, the second hardest is remembering to keep that chip from the original cd drive and place it in the new one. The "chip" I speak of give the disc drive it's specific Xbox functions so it knows what to do when a certain disc is in the drive.

eta: I did this by myself with tutorial video from xboxslave.com and a thrown away Xbox 360 that still had a working disc drive.

Luckily a good friend of mine has had his hands in his share of them. What did it cost for the replacement drive?

For me, nothing. I was house dad at a frat house and one of these kids threw away his old 360 cause of some issue (they just don't know how to fix things) so I took and checked the makers of both disc drive (which I forgot to mention that both drives have to be the same maker: ie Samsung or Phillips). It was all free for me and I did the work myself with a computer tool kit. Now, on the site the cheapest you can get is like a $35 drive I do believe, after shipping it'll be close to $50 bucks. *This is for the Original 360 not the black slim line version*

The Original 360 had disc drive issues FYI, so yours is a common problem for that model (if you have it).

Good to know. I have the Original. It's the one with the touch sensors. Hate it. Can't even wave your hand in front of it without the tray getting out of control.

Check the site for sure. They'll have all the parts you need and tutorials/videos to give you all the know how. To keep myself from spamming the board also visit youtube/google and do a search. They have channels on there that cover the same thing.

you need to be sure to replace the disc drive with the same type too. microsoft used about 5 different models of these. one type of drive's logic board will not fit into another types location. also like mentioned above, you have to keep the logic board from the original drive. otherwise, microsoft will read your box as modded and lock it up.

Found a broken 360 at a local pawn shop. $10 and she's good as new again. Thanks for the tips! Y'all are much more cordial than the OT'ers
