Has anyone on the board had any luck getting into a business school such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, etc?

If so do you have any recommendations for someone considering going that route?

Wharton FTW

That being said, no I have not, its in the future plans but mine are not quite that lofty. I am just hoping to get into one of the O&G/Energy MBA programs at one of the TX schools, SMU or UH would be nice. Rice has a good one but it is $.

I know I guy who got into Wharton.

Of course, he was pretty damn smart in his own right, went to West Point, and served in Afghanistan, so maybe you have a chance.

I have most boxes checked aside from military service, being a minority, and teaching under privileged children how to read in Uganda. I would just like to be able to gauge my chances and there's not a very good way to do that from what I've seen so far aside from applying.

LINK

This is a good website, they have a regular column where he handicaps various people. Read through some of these and find someone you can compare too.

Sounds like my brother. He got into Harvard, Oxford, and MIT, but he has a BS in Ocean Engineering from the Naval Academy, Master in Civil Eng from LSU, served in Afghan and recd the Navy-MC Commendation medal.

I got into all the LA schools I applied too.

Graduated Kellogg (northwestern) in the last couple of years. Can't speak for all of the top 10's admission processes but for Kellogg it's about having the right "story," which includes credentials.

GMAT, gpa, respected undergrad program, good work experience with a solid direction and perspective for where you're headed. This is what the essays in the application are all about: wrapping all these items up into a succinct story that says, here's who I am, what I've done, why I'm qualified, why I want to attend your program in particular, why I want/need to attend now and what I'm going to do with my life/career when I'm done.

Your application will get a half hour review by someone on the admissions committee, and in that time, you need to convince them that you are highly qualified, genuinely want to attend their program for reasons beyond its ranking, will attend if accepted (yield is very important), and will be a generous alum in the future.

If you can do those things, you have a fighting chance. If you have weak spots, work to strengthen them (even if it means delaying application), and if you can't, find a way to ease the concern around them when writing your essays.

Getting my MBA (Energy Finance concentration) at SMU with one more year left. And unfortunately, SMU is not any cheaper than Rice.

Apply

I agree with the other poster, you have to craft a good story to go with good grades. There are 1000's of kids with high gpa's and 700+ GMAT

I know a guy at HBS now and spent quite a bit of time with some Wharton MBA students when doing my international business residency in China last year. They all seemingly had a few things in common, they all went to top 30-40 public or private Universities, they had very high GPA's, at least 5 years of progressive leadership experience, their current employer was paying their way througn school and their employers had made large philanthropic donations to school historically.

My HBS friend says if someone else isn't paying then you have no business at HBS.

An employer sponsorship is a status symbol at HBS or the value isn't there without a sponsorship?

I wonder this too, because hbs is one of those places I wouldn't feel bad about paying to go to

Value and a earlier ROI isn't there.

I work alongside people that spent 5-7x more on their MBA than I did. Unless it's a highly specialized degree, all any MBA does is get your foot in the door. Once your foot is in the door, it's all about interviewing and then job performance.
