I think it's the Phoenix GM too and there's nothing wrong with hitting the reset button. But the "draft all your stars" model is a lot more likely to turn out like Charlotte or Sacramento than OKC.

I know that sounds crazy, but if you're an NBA general manager like me, the last place you want to be is in the middle. There are only two outcomes there: Either make the playoffs and be first-round fodder for one of the premier teams or miss the playoffs and pick somewhere around 11th to 14th in the draft. Either way, the odds are that you stay in that middle range. It's a recipe for disaster.

Right, because the owner isn't on the same page as the GM.
There's a LONG history of the guys(particularly the coaches) not being there when the team they rebuilt is ready to compete. Im sure they thought they had their owner's support.

Lebron's first coach, fired. Durant's first coach, fired. Rose's forst coach, fired. Dwight Howard's first coach, fired. Irving's already been around for his first coach firing. Etc...

And OKC is heading south. I feel like the whole "tanking is the only way" model has been blown WAY out of proportion, especially multiyear tanks. People in these little fantasy worlds assume that top-5 pick = rejuvenated franchise and star player. Everyone loves the tank while you're in the process. Once you draft Michael Olowokandi, the GM is an idiot.

Didn't the Hornets tank and get Anthony Davis?

He pulled off a hell of a trade to get Harden, so his style worked out, but that roster was ugly before the trade. They were looking at 25-30 wins.

And honestly, that method of rebuilding is just much harder than tanking. Rockets fans had to endure 4 years of blah basketball to get back to the 8 seed. The Pelicans are hoping to make the playoffs this year, after 2 down (really down) years.

Morey is one of the best dealmakers in the league. He took advantage of a couple bad GMs to get the pieces he needed. There are maybe only three or four GMs that could be successful using the same method. Dallas is trying like hell now, and as smart as their front office is, they're realizing how hard it is to go from average to great without the drop to being bad.

The Hornets traded away Chris Paul rather than have him walk away for free. That's different than what the Sixers or Suns are doing. People were trying to say that the Pelicans should have tried their hardest to not win again this year and talked shite after trading Boney Maronie and a top-5 protected pick for a 23 year old pg who's been an all-star. I can't get behind that.

Danny Ainge is being brutally honest, but truthful.

If they did they did a terrible job of it during the home stretch. They won some scratch your head wins at the end.

Barely missing the playoffs in the NBA puts you in a position where you get no value from your draft pick and you're sitting at home watching someone else win a ring.

fricking bullshite. The Spurs have been landing talent with the #20+ pick for a decade. Ginobili, Parker, etc. but they did land Duncan #1 overall. There is talent to be found in the middle of the draft, that's whAt GM's get paid to find

This is a distraction, they were talking to the 76ers GM the whole time.

The anonymous GM is telling all this to Jeff Goodman. I highly doubt the 76ers GM would say to someone else "look at the 76ers". Even if it may be a double reverse psych out to internet readers, the guy he's telling this to would be like "are you some sort of retard?"

Not intentionally.

They were in a LOT of close games, tried really hard, and won a few games down the stretch.

Hornets Talk was a constant battle of Anti-Tankers v. Tankers. I was a tanker.

I only have one problem with this. Let's say you are, I dunno the 5th or 6th best team in your conference. If you're the GM, do you play to "win now?"

To phrase it another way, where does the tanking stop? The 25th worst team, or the 15th worst team?

Yeah, Spurs were the most obvious IMO. But it worked
