Off week topic- Tiger schedule history
Posted by jhhingle on 10/29/13 at 10:06 am00
Perusing the schedule history and game times since I was alive (56 season) notice several games away (regular season) that were at night: Rice during 50's, UK during 60's, gumps & moo st. 58, green weenies mid 60's & various others; It was always thought our tradition night games was exclusive during the pre- mega TV era? (Realize UMiami played exclusive Fri. nights then)
Also, notice 59 season were 3 (ugh!) day home games and only 1 listed for TV? Did this not sit right with fans back then?
Any senior Tigers shed light on these?
A poster previously said we never lost away at night to gumps, this appears true since then also!
An Omen!

I'm about the same age as you, so I can't really remember the 50's. From looking at the '59 schedule, I only see the opener against Rice and the last game against Tulane as day games in Baton Rouge. Baylor was a day game in Shreveport. Rice was a tv game and Tulane-LSU was often an afternoon game (both in BR and in New Orleans) at that time. Coming late in the season, perhaps the heat was not such a factor.
There were many other Southern schools that liked to play at night. Certainly Tulane had many, if not most, of their games at night and I remember listening to night away broadcasts from Rice, Kentucky, Miami and Miss. St during the 60's. Ole Miss preferred the day games (and I remember them bragging that we hadn't beat them "in broad daylight since Roosevelt was president" or something along those lines).
