I recently moved to Texas. Like 2 weeks ago. What do I need to do in order to buy a handgun here.
I still have a La DL license

1.Acquire state drivers license.
2.Wait X number of days required to be a resident of that state.
3.Go to gun store purchase hand gun.
4. Gun store -> Profit.

Or since you still have a LADL, drive across state line, buy gun in LA and drive back to New New Mexico.

As I recently had to transfer my license over I will tell you it is a pain if you get the wrong DPS clerk. License has to reflect your current address if you want to buy any form of firearm. The DPS will want a utility bill and some other form of communication from a government agency with your name on it showing your current address and they might also ask to see your social security card and birth certificate. I also had to show them the receipt from when I registered my truck. Go prepared or be prepared to make multiple trips. Do not let your license expire or you will be forced to take the computer test.

Obviously wouldn't be surprised if you had to jump through more hoops buying a handgun, but I'm in TX and bought a rifle here two weeks ago with a LA license. No problem at all.
