To behonest, I've never had much desire to play any of the ones before VII. Not sure why.

VI is hands down the best in the series and one of the greatest games ever made.

I would try and keep an open mind on this series. So many exagerrated opinions on the series from a fanbase that is very polarizing on what is good and what isn't.

I think every game in the series is worth playing, and XIII isn't a bad spot to jump back into the series. Waiting for FFX HD is also a very good move, if you're ok waiting for another 2-3 months.

I still don't quite get what there is to like about X aside from the music and visual presentation.

It has the second best game play next to XIII. The sphere grid was also awesome.

This. VI is the best FF game of all time and the gap is substantial.

I know you said you're looking for current gen JRPGs, but if you want to play the best RPGs out there, you should go back to some of the older systems

You have gamefly, so you should give ff13 a shot. I personally didn't care for it to much but it has its fans

But if I were you, I would start with older rpgs and work my way up to current gen

A good place to start would be:
Chrono Trigger
FF6
Xenogears
Chrono Cross

If you want to play the best RPG games, you kind of have to go back to the SNES and PS1.

FFX HD remake is a must given your OP

you might want to check out the kingdom hearts HD remake as well for PS3

I'd play the older classics first. Since you didn't grow up playing them, there will be no nostalgia to keep you playing. Once you play the newer ones, I would think it would be hard to go back to the older ones.

I felt the same way, but lots of people on here recommended FF6, so I gave it a shot and loved it.

So I think its worth it for you to at least give the old classics a try first.

Standard turn-based system. There's not much to frick up. Although 8 managed to frick it up with the stupid gunblade trigger timing. Two things the X battle system does: get rid of the action timer, which I never had a problem with, and allows you to switch in party members mid-combat.

For an example of static turn-based combat done very well, look to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and the Persona series. Those aren't Final Fantasy, but they are examples of games that highlight for me just how mediocre X's system is. Even X-2 is more fun from a strategic standpoint.

I still found V and XII to be the most enjoyable independent from plot factors.

I disagree, but I'll never make any headway with this argument. Just like I'll never convince fans that Blitzball is one of the worst and most idiotic fictional sports ever conceived. That's counting Quidditch and the Pyramid game from Battlestar Galactica.

The Periodic table of spells thing in XII was strange and i didn't really care for it. Also, the cities were too damn big. I hated having to do the "talk to people" quests because they took forever.

I didn't like XII at all. But that's just me. OP may love it.

i liked the battle system. it was the first time they tried an open style battle system and it worked pretty well i think.

I just downloaded VII on Steam and man I can't get enough of it. I forgot how much I love this game, though I'll probably leave it for Battlefield 4 when that drops tomorrow night.

X, VII and IX were all great games. XIII made me want my money back. It was like: Shitty story and characters, blah blah weak plot I don't care about, super linear path with no fun side quests, X X X X X R1 X X X X X X X R1 X X X X, Oh hey I beat it. I am pissed and want a refund.

I personally enjoyed XIII. I do wish it had more towns and people to talk to, but the linear part does not bother me.

I haven't played any of these games in about four or five years. I'm gonna have to order the new FFXHD once it comes out. Jesus, I may have to tell my girlfriend i'm working late this week just to play through one of these games.

Is XV supposed to me a sequel to XIII?

No final fantasy XV is a different story. They said some characters from XIII may make a cameo appearance but the game will not be around those characters. XV will not have Cacoon or Pulse.

The best, and only, final fantasy game I've ever owned was mystic quest for the snes. The music was badass
