I've seen people post about hammocks for camping/packing quite a few times. Over the past six months I started using a hammock for all my camping, which has been over 20 nights sleeping in one. I'll try to put up some links and pictures as I get time.

Pros-
Comfort- I sleep as good in my hammock as I do in my bed.
Cooler- under 80F you will get a little chilly on your back side
Setup- any where you have two trees 12'-20' apart you can setup, no matter rocks, sticks, or uneven ground underneath

Cons-
Setup- must have two trees 12'-20' apart and strong enough to support your weight. I have used my horse trailer as a tree when I could only find one other tree that would work.
Cold-not really a con, but you must have proper bottom insulation in cold weather or your butt will freeze
Rain/moisture- you can get rain blown in from the side or underneath
Weight- you can get lighter setups with a tent, but not much lighter, also if two people are going together they would each need a full hammock setup instead of sharing one tent

Hammocks
You lay diagonal in a hammock. Wider and longer is normally more comfortable, but this will add weight if you are backpacking. You can get bug netting built in or just a hammock.

Tarps
Depending on how much you want to spend and how much weight you can carry there are countless options. Sil-nylon is the most popular.

Insulation
Tops quilts are easier to use and weigh less than a sleeping bag of equal insulation value. But I use a sleeping bag also at times. I just unzip it and use it as a quilt.
Under quilts fasten to the bottom of the hammock up against your back. A sleeping pad in the hammock or between layers of a double hammock work also, just not as comfortable or convenient.

Bug netting
Some hammocks have attached bug netting or you can get a separate bug net that goes around the hammock.

Suspension
There are multiple ways to attach the hammock to a tree. Some weigh less and pack smaller and some are easier to use and adjust.

Cost is about the same as tent camping. You can spend plenty, but there are options to go cheaper. Most of the expensive stuff has to do with saving weight. People that backpack will be affected more than someone that car camps.

The ones listed above are "cottage vendors". They don't sell on Amazon or any other catalog. Just through their websites.

Also ENO, Hennessy, and Grand trunk are other options that are available on Amazon, Cabelas, and other places.

Thanks for the post

I have been eyeing a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe Asym but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I definitely think hammocks are the way to go when backpacking in the summer time.

I started with a Hennessy expedition. It was a little tight for me, I'm 6'. My kid has it now and will be getting another for second son.

I didn't like the bottom entry. Wish I would have got the zipper opening.

For the money they are great. There are much better systems but would cost more.

And winter. My kids had theirs setup in the yard last night. It was 45 at 4AM when I left the house for work. Oldest just texted me that he was very warm. They were testing out their new under quilts they got in yesterday.
