little roller up along first... behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight, and the Mets win it!

Very dramatic, of course and the Mets did indeed win. But Boston had already blown the lead and New York had tied it up. Never have understood how this morphed into "Buckner losing the World Series".

Poor guy, had an otherwise successful career. Just one epic error.

Two outs, two runs up, and no one on base to start the inning made it even worse. But Knight would not have scored on the error had Bob Stanley not wild-pitched in the tying run with Mookie at the plate , which also allowed Knight to move from 1B to 2B, enabling him to score on the error, yet almost no one outside of Boston remembers that. It would have all been up to Howard Johnson, who was in the on deck circle at the time of the error. Also, Buckner could only have preserved the tie, while Stanley could have preserved the win and the World Championship for Boston by merely retiring Wilson without the wild pitch, and Wilson struggled badly throughout the WS. He was the only batter Stanley faced in that game.
The fact that the Red Sox blew a 3-0 lead after 5 innings of Game 7 was salt in the wound.
