NFL ends helmet deal with Riddell

LINK

quote:

The 2013 season will be the last to feature Riddell as the official helmet of the NFL, a league spokesman and the company confirmed Thursday night.

quote:

But during the past few years, as the league became increasingly focused on concussions, NFL officials were more concerned about the implication of selling exclusive branding rights to one helmet company over another. At an NFL-sponsored youth Play 60 event last year in New York City, the league had a variety of helmet manufacturers displaying their products to children and parents.

The deal was ending anyway, it just won't be renewed. Riddell makes one of the only 5* rated helmets in the Revo Speed.

Correct, Players can still wear Riddell as well as Schutt, Xenith, etc. The main take away from the article that I gained was the NFL is trying to distance itself from having a "sponsored brand" of helmet. The way it is now players can wear whatever helmet they choose as long as the name is not present due to their exclusive deal with Riddell. I believe that since the deal is ending the names of the other helmet manufacturers will be present on the helmets.

The study you reference only tested small aspects of head impact and was not conclusive. To say that one is better than the other is not correct. If one was scientifically proven to be better, they would all be forced to wear it.

Helmets prevent skull fractures, that's about it.

That's one thing that's been pointed out. The NFL mandates thigh pads and knee pads, yet still allows players to use outdated helmets.

You are basically correct...See VT Testing results

They are adding another factor into next year's test.

I'd go with whoever has the best disclaimer/warning and that would be Schutt....football causes concussions so don't play football.

Because legally there is a difference. They mandate that they wear thigh and knee pads now, which is a good change, but they don't mandate what kind they wear. If they start mandating which helmets they can wear then they open themselves up for more lawsuits. What if a player switches then gets a head injury that he never got before? They rely on NOCSAE for testing and certification and as long as they continue to pass them they will allow them.

...but they don't require the knee pads cover the knee (Rule 1-4-4d). A lot of players are wearing long biking shorts.
